Windfarm could cost up to £40 million

I'd like to propose hangings for any exceeding of budget, not achieving promised results in respect of generation output and failing to make tangible contribution to global CO2 reduction.

But is it a failure or was it an unrealistic target?

Presumably somebody in government was handsomely paid to crunch the numbers and calculate the risks before passing bits of paper to politicians to allow them to pronounce the aims and targets?

So on that basis IMHO, it's a fail. They've just pulled numbers out of their arses as usual and a huge amount of money has been spent trying to achieve the unachievable.

Agree with that and would add that the target was probably set more to comply with some perceived 'international obligation' rather than what could be reasonably achieved by the island without disproportionately damaging it or its residents.

But the discussion has been what are the penalties for failing to meet the target.

They haven't failed yet!

The only penalties will be felt by the taxpayers (as ever), it's difficult to see how the IoM collectively can be punished for trying to achieve the unachievable aims of a bunch of zealot clowns who have displayed the same sort of grasp of reality as they do in so many of their other aims.

There's nothing wrong with ambition but it needs to be tempered with common sense and tied into reality, both in time frames and economics.

One would hope that this would be recognised and some sort of waiver applied, we surely won't be the only ones to miss the target?

I am not clear on the actual force of the targets and who would waive them, or apply some kind of sanction for not reaching them.

There was debate a couple of years ago about whether we were under any kind of international obligation to meet internationally set targets.  IIRC, we were not signatories to that agreement (some COP or other treaty), but it may be that we were bound by the UK signing up, or we gave a commitment to the UK to toe this particular line.  I thought the UK had recently announced that it would not meet some of the targets themselves.

From what I can see, domestically, we have a plan approved by Tynwald.  Presumably, if the targets were unlikely to be met, a report would go to Tynwald for some resolution to amend them.  Not sure what would then happen in terms of international targets and sanctions which could be applied.  But pretty sure that we never set ourselves up to prosecute ourselves, or fine or jail anyone which was the proposition put forward yesterday.

What about compared to the rest of the British Isles?

Is Shetland more expensive than the IOM?

From the article. And presumably they're not carrying a half billion power station debt either...

Are you sure ?

Yes the introduction of renewable energy in the Shetland Islands has not led to a significant reduction in the cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour, electricity prices have generally remained high, and in some cases increased.

The cost of electricity can be around 30-50% higher than the UK average. This translates to an average cost of around 20-25 pence per kilowatt-hour , though in some cases it is even higher.

The idiot Miliband is going to dig the UK further into debt with his ridiculous target of Net Zero by 2030.

Our population in the Island will grow as more people jump from the UK , just watch in the next few years .
