Armed police dealing with incident around Railway Station, North Quay roads closed

Don't know anything about what went on, but it's a mistake to engage someone armed with a knife unless the odds are greatly in your favour, and an armed response isn't unreasonable. Too many Police officers have died from random stabs in close contact with people with knives, including Stephen Oake, son of Robin Oake, the former IoM Chief Constable. You can't assume that just because you're on Craggy Island that the risk is suddenly zero, that it's all just good-natured drunks who've accidentally picked up a kitchen knife instead of a chip fork.

Well any is too many, but there have only been three since he was killed 20 years ago (at least one of which was a terrorist attack, so hardly random).  So it's hardly a common form of death.  Indeed, as you can see from that list, any police deaths on duty are rare, there have only been six in the last ten years including accidents.

Because, for all the heroic posturing, being in the police is a fairly safe job with a low level of fatalities.  Being a building worker or a farmer is more dangerous (though the UK generally has a low rate of workplace deaths).

There was a policewoman too from the South of the Island who was stabbed and killed over the water it only takes a minute.

No she wasn't.  Fiona Bone and her colleague were killed in a grenade and gun attack.  It demonstrates the difficulty of using such unusual incidents to inform police response.  If you based things on this case, the police would turn up with a full armed response team every time someone reported a burglary - and shoot the person reporting it.

Perhaps the rarity of police deaths on duty in recent times might be down to their appropriate response to the types of incidents they are required to attend.

Presumably the building worker and farmer deaths you refer to is due to workplace accidents, and not as a result of them being murdered etc by armed criminals.

So you've evidenced that the use of body armour and armed response is the right thing to do. Someone who is brandishing a kitchen knife is not thinking rationally, irrespective whether that's motivated by religion, mental illness or tequila.

As you say, one is too many. If the expectation of a job is that it involves occasionally facing off against lunatics with knives, then risk assessments are done, lessons are learned, body armour and MP5s are issued. It's still risky, a couple of months ago three UK PCs were stabbed and slashed by a single assailant during a routine welfare check. Knife wounds only have to glance something arterial for them to be fatal, which is why they're so dangerous.
