The DOI has come in for criticism this morning on the National Propaganda Mouthpiece (NPM!) masquerading as Manx Radio. It’s workers who clearing ‘course equipment’ from the mountain section advised marshals that they had to remove personal possessions from the shelters and if they weren’t removed they would be left outside. Needless to say the marshals are not too pleased. You would have thought there is joined up thinking and collaboration between all these government, or non government bodies, without the need to wind them up, or piss them off, thereby destroying any remaining goodwill?

Why haven’t they taken their stuff with them?

Judging from the Manx Radio piece, the complaint seems to have been about timing as much as anything else.  "You must come and collect your stuff but you can't because we've shut the roads".  For example marshals may have left stuff in the huts and then might be moved to a different position and not had a chance to collect it.  This can't be a new situation and presumably in previous years it's been sorted out less officiously.

Given that it's the Chair of the Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club, Mr Brew who was complaining about the lack of notice and inability of those running things to respond it suggests a fair amount of complaints.  He also said "if marshals 'weren't already dissatisfied they are now'.  It seems the Motorsports lot spend half the time complaining they can't do things because of the lack of marshals and medics and the other half annoying the ones they do have.

It was also mentioned that there are still a fair number of visiting motorcyclists over and perhaps it would have been sensible not to close the mountain road on Tuesday and Wednesday to remove the race furniture but to leave it for a few days for the visitors to enjoy a trip around the course.    Non cooperation from various departments would suggest some people are not fans of the Manx Grand Prix.

I wouldn’t be necessarily assume it has anything to do with the motorsports people but DoI, who have, like with every other Department of Government, a different agenda. For IOM Government, read “Dysfunctional”.

It's being done by the DoI, but they would be doing so under the direction of Motorsports (there may be internal recharging) and to a timetable set by them.  You get the impression that there was a desire to put everything away as quickly as possible for the convenience of those running it, irrespective of what was best for the volunteers, the fans or the public.

Isn't the fact that they have reported on the displeasure of the marshals with the actions of an IOMG department a clue that MR is not a National  Propaganda Mouthpiece?

There you go again, Glad - we’ll have none of your pesky facts and reasoning here, if you don’t mind!

An odd story in IOM Newspapers:

The organisers of the Manx Grand Prix were involved in a late U-turn in allowing a rider to do a lap in memory of his late father.

Former TT rider Graham Read’s father was Phil Read MBE, who competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing from 1961 to 1976 and won eight FIM Grand Prix road racing world championships.

Phil died in October 2022 at the age of 83, which led to his son Graham wanting to commemorate him in some capacity during this year’s Manx Grand Prix.

Graham, who has previously competed on the Mountain Course three times himself, was hopeful of being involved in the ‘Made at the Manx’ parade lap in memory of his father, but was left frustrated at the fact American racer Dave Roper was designated to do this instead.

In correspondence with the Manx Independent, Graham wrote: ‘The MGP organisers have, without any consultation or permission from the Read family, arranged and paid for American Dave Roper to fly over to ride in this event representing our dad.

‘There is absolutely no link or connection between the two riders and the Read family does not condone, recognise, approve or support this representation of Phil Read at the MGP.’

After late consultation between the Read family and the organisers of the MGP, it was arranged that Graham himself would fly to the island from the UK and ride the lap in memory of his father instead.

Given how recently Read Snr died, you would have thought they would have consulted with the family, but the whole things looks more like it was an excuse to pay for the people they wanted to attend to come.  Fair enough for those participants in their own right, but a bit murky for those representing those long gone.

The whole thing looked a bit thrown together at last minute with the list of those being represented only published in July (and coming under some criticism) and while that said Full details of all rider and machine combinations for the parade lap will be released over the coming weeks in the lead up to the event, that doesn't seem to have happened.  Still who knew the centenary of the MGP was coming up?
