HOPs

On the subject of the beer itself, which is kind of nice that this thread has actually reached it (!), there is at least some benefit to the new ferry terminal in Liverpool!  Where it's situated is even closer to the Azvex Brewery which also has a taproom. Currently it's about 10 minutes walk away but it's kind of just behind the new one!

Azvex usually produce usually pales and IPAs in the 5-8% ABV range but they sometimes do sours and imperial stouts, which are usually excellent.

M&S have a decent selection these days too if you're trying to get into craft beer and at a more reasonable price point than the specialist craft beer places.

I'm down with trying any kind of alternative/craft (old man proper aley/bitter) beers, lagers, ciders and stouts.  It's the IPAs I find kind of tiresome, most of them just taste like pot pourri to me.  I'm probably not sofistikated enough.

Not sure exactly.  I'm guessing 400ml ish.  Was between your standard can size and the big 500ml cans.

Can very much depend what hops they're using. At one point I can see why people would say that.

Now there are several new and hybrid hops. Nelson Sauvin is one I particularly enjoy. Originates from New Zealand and gives off hints of gooseberry and almost white wine/grape like tastes, hence the name (and it originated in the same region) as Sauvignon Blanc.

Sometimes even a subtle change in hops can make a massive difference.

Ayeeee, white mans black magic!!!

I don't drink beer, just the occasional Wheat beer. Can you recommend any ? but not any with a silly name, brew dog style!

As for that can above, sounds dreadful. Tried a Banana beer ONCE!

I always find the NZ whites to taste 'grassy'.  Are the NZ hops similar?  But I'm a red not a white wine drinker, although I will make some exceptions - usually local whites when I'm in country e.g. the Portuguese Green wines and I've discovered some remarkably good Greek whites.

How about an 11% banana cheesecake stout I have in my stash somewhere?

Anyway wheat beer I'd mostly stick to German weiss. All the usuals you'll likely have had before. Paulaner, Erdinger (I think Hops stock this one) and the like.

The 'gold standard' so to speak is Allagash White but it's quite hard to come by in the UK.

Not that I've noticed.

Give it a try and see what you think.

I'm sure Hops still have a couple of NZ hopped beers in store. If you go in and talk to the guy he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

NZ Hops are used by Okells in their beers

Wasn't actually aware.

Tried enough O'Kells to know I don't think I'd like any of them.

Would appear Nelson Sauvin is used in at least the Olaf, Maclir, Saison and Bitter.

Helpfully, some of the other beers just have the one ingredient listed, water!
