P.K.
Going to see Peter Kay at the men on 22/9. Seen him before but he knows how to raise a laugh. In the main standups are bloody clever and very sharp people. Paul Merton is still making folks laugh after how many series of HIGNFY? Reading passages from the bible out loud. They weren't well received. Edited September 14, 2023 by quilp

His improvisation skills are superb. We went to watch him and his gang at the Gaiety a few years back. We ended up in Sir Norman's after the show and all of them came in and proceeded to do another improv session for free in the bar!

Good that you remember it. Didn’t Matthew claim blasphemy about Connelly's god jokes? Indeed he did. And in the build up to the show he was constantly in the news about the likely blasphemy etc. yes he was very funny even if toned down which he for sure was . And I’m old so remember lots lol

Ukrainians (in general) are refugees, who have fled their homes because it is unsafe, but their ultimate aim is to go home. Syrians (in general) are asylum seekers, also fleeing, but fleeing a situation they don’t like, rather than the fear of being bombed. They don’t want to go back. They want to stay, get jobs, etc. That takes much more processing. Nothing to do with skin colour.

Amazing how one group can be fast tracked allowing them to live in the community and take up employment and places at schools, colleges etc. When the other group, who by your reckoning actually want to remain in the UK, are confined to processing centres, hotels etc whilst not being allowed to work and require much more processing. Skin colour is definitely part of it. As is religion. The major difference is the UK set up safe and legal routes for Ukrainians but refuse to for Syrians or anyone else.

About 15.3 million people have left Syria, which suggests that 'a situation they don't like' is something of an understatement. In the years 2014 - 2020 when the numbers fleeing Syria were greatest the UK accepted 20,000 refugees.
