Max Power Posted September 20, 2023 Share Posted September 20, 2023 (edited) Just a rumour at present but following the Porsche Taycan incident at the 33rd, a well known island insurance company has been forced to reconsider how it insurers EVs on the island. The difficulty that has arisen concerns to disposal of the salvage, which mitigates the cost to the insurer. It's rumoured that the SPCo are unable to ship any vehicle with unstable electronics and damaged batteries? This has a knock on effect in that even repairable cars can not be shipped off island for specialist repairs. The battery forms a huge part of the chassis in most EVs and damage will make them unstable. It does beg the question of what will happen to the damaged Taycan, which was written off, and any subsequent badly damaged EVs? It's believed that the TT Zero machine which caught fire at the TT a few years ago has had to be buried somewhere, with all the leeching dangers which that entails. Not really, the requirement to ship cars away to specialist breakers/recyclers or repairers is an island one. Other small islands will suffer the same issues. The worlds only 'National Biosphere' where you'll be unable to bring over an EV. I joked about the SPCo having a forklift on board in case an EV ever hitched up and they needed to throw it overboard. Possible but I'm guessing there might be an additional carriage charge for the insurance. Not sure what volume of cargo, if any, departs from Mann.
