EV Island Issues

It's believed that the TT Zero machine which caught fire at the TT a few years ago has had to be buried somewhere, with all the leeching dangers which that entails.

If true, somebody needs to make sure that this is flagged up to Daffers and her band of eco-zealots. Still, it's another opportunity for somebody on the IoM, local electric vehicle disposal services will be required because we can't ship them away.

Maybe we could throw them down a disused mineshaft at Snuff the Wind now those pesky, polluting kids on their bikes have been chased off.

Not really, the requirement to ship cars away to specialist breakers/recyclers or repairers is an island one. Other small islands will suffer the same issues.

Well Jersey have recently announced large subsidies to buy EVs and obviously have a lot more EVs than here so doesn’t sound like a big problem

this was discussed on a local EV facebook group recently and the answer given was that Mezeron will ship damaged EV's off the Island for £1000.

Was it actually the solution?  Or just 'someone on Facebook said'?

Another option could be those barges that Capt Carter uses for dredging, that have got a trap door in the bottom?

Speed limit in Jersey is 40mph, so it would be a bit of a challenge to crash one hard enough to damage the battery I would have thought?

There must be quite a few vehicles on the island - let's say 40,000. Let's also say that at some time or other everyone will have an electric car.

Everyone gets home for tea at the same time and plugs their car into the charger.

40000 * 20(amps) * 240(volts) = 192 MegaWatts additional load. Can the cables under the streets take the strain?

[A little while ago Youtube sent me a video (unfortunately I can no longer find it) - someone in England installed an EV charger. Then the council came around and tested the wiring from his garage to the road, and found it was not up to the task, so his driveway had to be dug up to install higher capacity cables. His house did not look particularly old, either.]

When we’ve all got smart meters they can turn off the chargers to divert the power elsewhere 😬

There is never going to be that kind of load in reality. You only need to charge a car once maybe twice a week and with a home charger that will generally be overnight.

Public chargers would.be mostly used during the day so that will spread the load as well.

We will need a crapload more rapid chargers though. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few pop up at the Bowl with easy access to the power infrastructure and probably at Parade Street if and when they put the masses of solar panels there.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  !!!!!!

Actually, it's not a problem, until one catches fire on the boat ????

Yeah I know that. It's unlikely an undamaged battery would ever go up. But the problem is the insurance companies not covering you because the ferry won't take your car if it's damaged and needs repair.
