In a car park! No shit! My god, the fire service is recruiting some pretty perceptive brains these days.

There will be some who are absolutely devasted that this fire wasn't caused by an EV.

Climate change denial is coming loud from some and no wonder the tories are using it as an election weapon

Certainly didn't stop the gammon line spending most of today using the fire as an excuse to have a go at EVs.

It's weird. Irrespective of what was responsible, and since the investigation is not yet complete it's difficult to be certain, but there's a feeling of being threatened by EVs amongst the gammons.

Even though the coverage and statements from a senior Firefighter said that it was a Diesel, lots of the newspaper social media comment seemed to be from gammons desperate to argue. EVs had to be stopped.  Any statement referring to Diesel was downvoted, because it didn't fit their narrative (or the narrative of a Middle Eastern/Russian troll farm, possibly). As others have pointed out, non-electric vehicle fires kill a lot of people, but that doesn't suit their narrative either.

There was a lot of "Diesels can't catch fire" despite JLR issuing a recall for diesel Evoques and Range Rover Sport vehicles a few years ago because a bad batch of about 8,000 cars were catching fire from faulty wiring.

Petrol is such an unstable liquid you cannot use your mobile telephone on a petrol station forecourt because it might explode.

The most reasonable explanation I have seen for this regulation was back in the early days of the Internet. Someone wrote an article, phrased in a reasonably technical way, and explained that at that time EMI and other things were not widely understood and protected against.

When the first mobile phones came out, rich people found if they made a mobile phone call whilst filling up their Rolls Royce that the petrol pump meter would reset to zero.

The petrol companies could not let everyone know how to get free petrol, so they invented this rule.

If it were true, whenever there is a gas leak, the signs would not just say "No naked flames", but would also say  "No selfies on your mobile phones - and definitely do not use your mobile phone to call the gas company".

But they don't. So there is no problem. That is all. Have a nice day.

But sure, the real danger is with EVs.

That's a weird one. I've always believed the "spark" narrative, but someone told me recently it was because the old mobiles used to interfere with the signaling from the pumps to the tills. I was trying to prove them wrong but I couldn't actually find any verifiable instances of a spark from a mobile igniting anything at a petrol station, apart from some dubious Youtubery.

Not threatened. Most people are just annoyed listening to all these pious berks who think they’re saving the world by buying an EV. They aren’t. They’re just boasting about their new toys.

EVs are just like any other vehicle though. People don't buy them necessarily because they think they're saving the world, they can buy them because they're faster, quieter, need less maintenance and can be charged at home.

That image should be on a shit parking site. Just to really shame them.

I’m guessing he was driving when it started to burn and stopped. Bit harsh to expect him to park properly with his arse in fire :)
