Total nonsense. Every country I can think of, and a couple I’ve had experience of, require testing of imported second hand cars, if they’re old enough to require periodic technical inspection, before they can be re registered.

And for the most part the tests and documentary requirements are much more onerous than UK to IoM. I’ve personal experience of ITV in Spain and KAT in Bulgaria.

Given the MoT is only an indication of roadworthiness on its date of issue, immediately after testing I’m not sure an open door policy is a good idea, either for vehicle, road, passenger or pedestrian safety.

The time will come, and probably not too far into the future, that IoM will have to introduce an inspection regime for Manx cars to travel beyond the UK. We only get away with not because we are signed up to the 1949 Vienna Convention on Circulation. It didn’t really matter whilst UK was in the EU as EU rules superseded the Vienna Convention rules. Post Brexit things are tighter. Most countries are on Vienna 1968. JSY and GSY have moved to 1968 and introduced testing.

One of the reasons IoM residents only get 1 year, rather than 3, International Driving Permits, is the difference between ‘49 & ‘68.

Theres no reason it can’t be 5 years after 1st registration and every 2 years thereafter. And allow cars less than 5 years since 1st registration to register here without test.

However, testing should be private, not government. Northern Ireland’s is state run and a total mess.

Thanks for the replies. Very informative and eye opening. Think I’ll just have a punt on the car and see what happens in Tromode. The same car would cost up to 4k more here.

The joys of living in a limited/captive market.  Yes you'll generally find that there is obviously more choice in the UK (why I usually import, as I'm generally after something very specific) and prices are lower.  But on the flip side, if you've got something a bit niche or rare, usually you'll get more for it in the UK.  I had to re-export a car to the UK a few years back to make an extra couple of grand on the sale, as there wasn't the market here for the sale.

Does anyone know who replaces car soft tops. There used to be an Italian gentleman who had a workshop at his house, he live somewhere on the estate off Johnny watersons?  Apologies if l've posted this in the wrong section.

You're probably thinking of Yannis, he operated out of Snugborough Industrial Estate in Union Mills? Not sure if he is still about to be fair.

Depending on the car, it may be cheaper, and more efficient, to take it to a UK specialist as it's not an occupation with much demand here, meaning that the skills required do not get much of a chance to develop, a bit like a lot of things!

Thank you Max, apologies for my  late reply, l'm not sure if it's the same chap,  he was situated at a  private residence with attached workshop.  It now looks like it might be a mechanical fault rather than replacing hood fabric.

Yes, you are right it's often difficult to find the right person to do specialist work on the island, not always impossible though.
