So you’re saying people in Castletown are now paying more for groceries in Tesco than they were in ShopRite previously ?
also if you had transport you would have a 20 mile round trip to save a few pounds on your shopping whilst spending more on petrol plus an hour of your time?

As ManxMare pointed out, it's not just the 15% Express mark-up that makes shopping in the Castletown Tesco expensive, it's the lack of choice.  Budget lines aren't stocked and the bias is towards instant food more than before.  So you may have to go into Lake Road or Port Erin to get what you want and in a largish shop the savings will be more than a couple of quid and so worth it.  Of course if you work in Douglas or are going in for some other reason, it won't be as much of a detour.

But it's still inconvenient for many people and difficult for those with less mobility.  It may also not be a wise move for Tesco who may find they do not attract enough convenience store custom from the Coop and the garages to compensate.

What! Going into Tesco is like being led led into 1940's gas chambers!

I had the pleasure of visiting a large Tesco extra in Newtownbreda this week while attending a hospital appointment in Belfast and can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, we had lunch which was very reasonably priced and of excellent quality and then done our monthly shop and saved £32 with our clubcard offers. Maybe when Victoria road is completed it may be worth your while to visit with an open mind and you may like myself enjoy the experience.

That's not going to happen, is it? Seems the ship sailed about 60 years ago.

I’ve always gone to Lake road approximately every 4/5 weeks for a large shop used shoprite and coop for “bits” but was hoping I could still do same but better prices when Tesco came

Am not sure their commercial teams will let that happen !

Bit of context here

Origins. Jack Cohen, the son of Jewish migrants from Poland, founded Tesco in 1919 when he began to sell war-surplus groceries from a stall at Well Street Market, Hackney, in the East End of London.

So Onchan Tesco is going to be an Express but Victoria Rd is going to be the proper job it seems a bit unfair that two stores a stones throw away should have different prices.   It may not seem much when you say 20p or so on an item but if you are doing a big shop it will be a huge difference.    It is discrimination and does not bode well for customer relations.     The Coop will probably gain from this.

What do people expect.Tesco now have 10 venues on the Island . Why would they have 10 superstores. They will obviously have different types of stores to meet the needs of  a population of 80k people. They are a business and have different grades of stores with different ranges and  different pricing.

Would people rather they had two superstores or even a Tesco  Extra store and closed down the smaller ones making a lot of people redundant.

No one is far from a Superstore so as customers we can make a choice.

What makes you say that? When they set out their plans a few weeks ago they said Onchan (with Peel, Port Erin, Ramsey and Victoria Road) would be a 'superstore'. I haven't read anything that contradicts that.

You have a choice. Its the same in the UK. Convenience vs price. No one ever said anything was fair.

So, if it is only a stone's throw away, go to the cheaper store.
