In the old Soviet days Alcohol was sold from special shops - when Gorbachev came into power he restricted sales of alcohol such they there were queues 100m or longer waiting for their ration; supermarkets were slow being adopted by the soviets - the classic soviet shops were those on the ground floor of the large housing blocks
