Probably not enough, as Shoprite were going out of business before Tesco agreed to buy them.

Were they, or is this just a feeling that you got when visiting the Victoria Road store? I think that both Victoria Road stores were probably struggling against Tesco but the main one seemed to be ticking along? I got the impression that the rest of the businesses were busy and that the sale was more to do with the owners restructuring and renting out the stores. That would make a lot of sense, it removes the uncertainty of business fluctuations with them being a relatively vulnerable smaller business?

Shoprite approached Iceland, Waitrose, Sainsburys, and Morrisons as well as Tesco. None of the others made them an offer.

Shoprite were trying to sell themselves rather than go out of business.

First MF actual price comparison stolen from the okells thread.

Four cans £6.30 in Lake Road.  Just over a 15 percent hike for Castletown to £7.25

That’s a much bigger differential than between supermarkets and express across . It will be interesting to see what happens if anything to their base prices in the main supermarkets when the refurbishments are all complete .

They were trying to sell themselves, but it doesn't necessarily follow that they were going out of business. There's doing well, there's just ticking along and washing your face, and there's running at a sustainable loss while examining options. Unless you have inside information it could have been anywhere on the spectrum. It's possible that they were making around the same that they will now be making from the rent with a lot less hassle in running a retail business and more predictability. This could well have been the basis of the deal, but we are all just guessing.

It will. This is what we are keeping a close eye on as we are often in Tesco both here and in the UK. Hitherto, most items have been the same to the penny. A few differentials are starting to creep in although minimal at the moment and Aldi price matching seems to be being maintained.

There's nothing to indicate they were making a loss - the problem they had was known for a long time, the lack of succession.  In the end I suspect only Tesco were interested because the other chains at most would have wanted to pick and choose which stores they took on.  This way the Nicholsons have at least 21 years guaranteed income.

That's the question though, because they wanted to sell the retail side of the business doesn't necessarily mean that they were going out of business. They may have found that renting out all their sites was a less volatile business than trying to make the retail side work as a retailer without the purchasing power of the likes of Tesco, particularly in the volatile food industry at present?

Unless you are a Shoprite director or shareholder, or privy to their financials of course?

And they'd have had to take on Tesco. Not an inconsiderable factor.
