What has happened to Claire Christian?  She was never afraid to voice her opinion on things or try to hold her colleagues to account, mostly sensibly.

Shame, because I had high hopes of her.

She was photographed attending the British Irish Council Summit recently. Will probably get a COMIN role at some point, so any principles will go out of the window.

I have no particular support for either side in this Middle East conflict, terrible as it is.

But that said, if say a member of the UK House of Commons who represents Tamworth North ( if there is such a constituency, I made it up) who lives in Birmingham pronounces upon this conflict either way, they are not ridiculed.

Is it just because we are such a small jurisdiction that our politicians are not allowed the right to an opinion on such matters, that their UK counterparts are?

Surely an elected representative in Tynwald is allowed their right to opine on such matters as much as a member of the UK House of Commons is.? Whether or not you agree with them.

Or do we just laugh at ourselves for being so inconsequential?

Yes that is OK but she is taking the Terrorist support line which is not OK

It's a shame that she can't be so vocal about the oppression of the Manx taxpayers by the IoMG and its CS.

The same could be applied to Sarah Maltby MHK. Both MLP MHKs foray into world affairs, and their misguided attempts to believe that the IOM can influence the dynamics of a region is rather childlike and comical. It also coincides with the recent start of the new political year, sittings of Tynpotwald and the HoK, and both the MLP MHKs haven’t come up with anything meaningful to the debate. They were also silent during the holiday period, unless Cretters Senior was devising policy?

Just think about that.  Do you really think people will be flocking here to take lower paid jobs? Would you uproot yourself to move elsewhere with more expensive accommodation (if you can find it) and no automatic entitlement to benefits if the job doesn't work out?

It depends on the nature of those incoming migrants, Gladys. Look at some of the reputed predecessors, living upstairs above the old KFC, or top to tail in guest houses single rooms on the prom. There will always be those prepared to rough it accommodation-wise and also employers who will welcome them on account of their being willing to work for less on account of having lower expectancy. Do we really want to be in a race to the bottom?

But the work permit system was operating and didn't prevent that situation.

True - but do we want to multiply the situation and be complicit in it by legalising it? There will always be those who flout the law....but if we have no laws we have no control at all.

Of course there will, but if the work permit system is there or not, they will still operate in that way.  If people are being trafficked, the trafficker is hardly likely to apply for work permits.

I would say this is a similar scam and you certainly won’t be putting up a needy “international student” in your spare room.
