Of course there will, but if the work permit system is there or not, they will still operate in that way.  If people are being trafficked, the trafficker is hardly likely to apply for work permits.

No but it's much easier and quicker to pick up people without a work permit than on immigration grounds.

Is it?  Who does the picking up, the police?  Is it an arrestable offence?

Years ago it was National Insurance officers who policed the work permit system. Think everyone’s friend Trevor Cowin was the main person who sent his staff out to implement and keep track on WP. Who can remember the continued pressure he put on Gubay due to his failure to abide by the rules. Nowadays who would know but seeing as pretty well everyone gets one ,who applies ,it’s not really an issue.

I see Joney Faragher MHK Douglas East has been on the NPM (MR) this morning, demanding CM Cannan and IOMG call for a ceasefire in the hostilities between Israel and Gaza.  She says the island needs to be on the right side of history,

Joney Faragher is entitled to her views and opinions, but trying to demand that IOMG and CM Cannan stride the world stage and get involved in international conflicts, is rather comical. IOMG and CM Cannan certainly can’t sort out the islands many problems. Joney Faragher instead of jumping on the left wing stop the war coalition bandwagon, would be better trying to address the many issues which the voters of Douglas East currently face.

Cannan couldn't even fix the DOI he’s hardly going to stop a foreign war. She’s just another hopeless bleater who might be best advised to focus her social media content nearer to home.

There have been quite a few people sacked for using a phrase that Jewish people find offensive. shaky ground for a manx politician.

It seems a very studenty, binary perspective - a side has been chosen and the other side is demonised, and  ridiculous language used about "being on the right side of history" whilst ignoring the deaths of 1,500 in outrageous terrorist attacks on civilians. My side good, other side bad.

Unfortunately, the history and politics of Israel and Palestine are far more complex than she thinks, and there are clearly a lot of issues that don't make it past her own confirmation bias.

Part of the good thing about democracy is having some stirrers and shakers that upset the applecart and bring in new perspectives. It's pretty rare on the staid, conservative, pipe-and-slippers IOM, but the thing to note is that it's OK to express alternative opinions. It doesn't mean they have to be adopted.

That being said, the prospect of a tiny town-council-sized government wading into middle east politics is ridiculous, an exercise in virtue-signaling. Whenever things like this are considered, the main focus should be on the benefits for the IOM. Nothing good for the IOM  will come of blundering into a complex multi-national conflict based on some naive student-union outrage.

She's just following the Labour party line, a line that does not fit with the island's business model, politics or culture...as demonstrated by the few Labour candidates that scraped in by only a few hundred votes (or less). Labour probably only represents around 5% of the electorate here.

It's a complex, dangerous and divisive topic for an island politician here to get involved with...and as a result she'll probably pay the price for it in terms of votes next time.

Sometimes it's better to say nothing rather than something here.

i'm not so sure , alfie wants 15000 new residents, we could easily get 1000000 new residents if we invite a few muslims to move house
