Estonian ambassador visit

I think if we had voted on that issue, we'd have got the same response (Which is why, imo, our 'leaders' didn't give us a vote).

That may well be true, but it isn't how democracy works, nor should it be.

Democracy isn't about getting your own way. I've never voted for anyone who has been elected for example, I'm fine with that.

But at least my vote has been counted.

Many of our most fundamental political decisions (relationship with the EU, involvement with UK foreign policy etc.) are decided in a totally undemocratic manner.

I'd far rather have a vote on these issues  than a chance to influence who the next commissioners may be - they are much more important and fundamental decisions IMHO, regardless of the result .

I really can't see any justifyible reason not to. Democracy is not something to be scared of.

problem is with our census by the time they publish it the figures can be way out of date  and 10 years is far too long to wait for another , governments economic division is a shadow of its former self and very little is being done to closely monitor lots of  important   population and economic issues happening in our community ,

and dare I say it some ministers and civil servants  don't want you to know either

I get the impression that this is increasingly common.  If you look at the Island Plan it's noticeable how few numbers there were in it - either describing the past/present or as hopes for the future.  A nice warm word soup is what is preferred to make those involved feel like they are doing something virtuous, with them actually doing anything at all.  Measuring and counting stuff might break the illusion.

That said, simply because it is something that has been done regularly for nearly two centuries, censuses tend to be reasonable reliable and the delay with something like population details isn't that great (it comes out nine moths after Census Day).  There are clearly some problems but it's a lot better than nothing.  It's also every five years on the Isle of Man.

Doesn't interest politicos as they only get 2-5 years as Minister. Also first area to get cut, look at public health cuts many areas of monitoring/surveys

Is anyone meeting his dude when he visits in November?  I wonder which local businesses will benefit from doing more trade with Estonia?

The Ambassador’s stated interests for the visit are: digital health, digital industry, defence industry, timber, ed tech.”

Its a nice proactive thing and I wonder who had the foresight to instigate it?  More of the same please

Let the moaning and negativity commence!

Is there a link to his visit details?

I did not know we had a defence industry, every day a learning curve.

you must be going around with your eyes closed , most of the engineering companies make components  for military aircraft  and there are companies here so specialist  thats its just as well you don't know exactly what they make , but are very high value
