Triangulation is patch on island. Fewer masts make it tricky. I use a case study of a murder over here in my lectures with a remote deposition site. The resource implications were extreme and in the end they were stomping around the wrong piece of ground.

What do you need triangulation for? How many people do you think are up at the Sloc at 1:00AM on a Tuesday night? Just log the numbers of the one or two phones that probably ping as they’ll be the only people within 2 square miles.

Simple answer is because it doesn't work like that. Stuff pings off masts miles away. You need to triangulate to eliminate the outliers and actually give you a direction of travel.

An open country search of even a couple of square miles is a big undertaking.

With a bit of luck, they left the keys in the ignition - and there is a front door key on the keyring.

Surely the first thing you'd do is run the reg, go the the address asap and wait for someone wet, tired and muddy to show up?

Assuming of course it's not nicked.  Or before the individual can get home themselves, tuck up in bed, await the knock on the door and then claim they thought the car was outside.

Plus if they are comms. savvy. The alleged miscreants will only use their phones intermittently.

If they were any savvy, they wouldn't need to use their phones at all.  It's remote for the Isle but realistically assuming you don't walk off a cliff, any other direction would get you to civilization within a couple of hours and there are plenty of footpaths and mountain bike trails around there.

Although they probably TikToked the whole thing.

There you go again Derek, using practical experience instead of practical guesswork... Now where's Gizo when you need his expertise...

To ne honest a lot of policing is common  sense, and making the best of the resources to hand to resolve a situation. But it doesn't always work in a linear and joined up way, so unless you explain stuff the public think you are an even bigger bunch of balloons than they had already decided you were!
