Reading between the lines of the latest statement (or rather Manx Radio's report of it), it looks like it wasn't the people they were looking for:

Three men were arrested on suspicion of drug-related offences during an incident at The Sloc last week, police have confirmed.

The road in the south of the Island was closed for most of the day on Thursday (26 October) while officers carried out an open air search.

At the time they said officers were searching for the occupants of a vehicle they had stopped in the early hours of the morning.

A statement issued today says: 'Following their arrest and interview, all three men were bailed from the Police Station pending further enquiries.'

'This was as a result of a large amount of Class A and Class B drugs seized from the area where we conducted our searches during the road closure. We thank the public again for their patience whilst the road was closed.'

Presumably they picked up the suspects fairly quickly, but were worried they had disposed of any 'goods' they were carrying on the way.  That also explains why they had to close the whole road for a day while they examined the road margins for packages or any particularly happy-looking sheep.

That said, if it was that major a drugs bust, you wonder why the suspects were bailed as there's no way the police can sure that they managed to get everything.

If the drugs weren’t found in the car or on the persons arrested there’ll have to be extensive forensics, prints, DNA, etc, from vehicle and drugs packages. Takes weeks. Beyond PPA holding powers and custody time limits.

They’ve got the car, the people and, at least, some, if not all of the drugs, but not enough evidence to charge, yet. And no longer reason to hold.

Yes, I can see the legal reasons why they can't - and linking individuals to particular items may still be difficult.  But it must be annoying.  Expect lots of unlikely looking hill-walkers in the South in the next few days.

Isn't there also a possibility the cops have a tail on them, hoping they'll lead them to any additional stash? Or is that only "as seen on TV"?

Lots of new beach walkers around Dorset and Sussex recently after loads of drugs being washed up recently.

Reminds me of this too:

Rumour has it that it was the inspiration for the film Cliffhanger.

story on 3FM tonight says someone has been arrested in connection with this incident ,and items seized so watch this space ,

Story on the NPM ( MR) also says large quantity of class A&B drugs seized, and those arrested released on police bail pending further inquiries. No doubt before long the police will be making appeals for information?
