Seems they can push anything through that benefits them...

I know everyone will hate this - but isn’t the pay rise decisions completely taken away from MHKs (and MLCs) now and not voted for in Tynwald, and instead awarded completely independently?

No one will ever win the argument over pay though - as I’ve posted before: pay too little and you get only the independently wealthy wanting to do it, pay to much and a lot will do it for the money. An unwinable argument wherever you sit.

As well as all civil servants Tynwald members will get 6% back dated to April, don’t think this will please general public!

Agreed

Because the general public are stupid.

It’s the same pay rise as the rest of the civil service, and if we don’t pay decent money we won’t get decent applicants at the next election.  This intake are a car crash, but bump the money into six figures and you might start seeing decent people putting themselves forward.

Does air miles Alf deserve a 30% pay rise?  He's banged on about an island plan for two years and achieved nothing.  His crowning achievement is signing off on the Liverpool landing stage.

What do you expect him to have announced, planned and implemented on two years?

Decent applicants? Thats a joke, but the last few General Elections haven’t been any different. If the politico salary was increased to over £80k excluding serving in departments etc, there would still be likely to get the same kind of candidates, a better class of farmer, postman, civil servant and granny farmer.

Are you saying we have decent MHK’s now?

Question we all have to ask and in turn answer. Do we get value for money from our MHK’s and MLC’s . Do they realistically earn the salaries and additional benefits . Basic MHK’s 75k . I have to say lots certainly don’t .

No amount of money will compensate for the lack of breadth and depth in quality available within the population. Tynwald in the past have awarded themselves considerable payrises and along with the more normal (such as now), the justification has always been that, "We need to attract the right people".

But regardless of the money; we always attract the same sort of people because they are the only ones available. Combine that with a flawed democratic system and it is why we are where we are.

We could pay them a million each p.a. but we wouldn't get any better candidates.
