Digital ID

This might be the most Isle of Man thing ever.

Publicise something that actually sounds pretty good, until you read the part where it says not everywhere accepts it.

Surely its not that difficult to just make sure everywhere is on board and set a date from which places must accept these to save people carrying ID ?

"Digital ID launched for alcohol purchases!

Residents can now use digital forms of identification when purchasing alcohol on licensed premises or from off-licences.

Digital Connect ID has been approved as a convenient alternative to carrying a verified physical ID such as a passport, driving licence or proof of age card.
Currently, three free and user-friendly apps are accepted - from YOTI, Lloyds Bank and the UK Post Office.

This reduces the hassle of remembering and managing multiple cards and enhances security through robust verification processes.

❕Establishments are not required to accept Digital IDs, and there will be a transition period for businesses who will accept Digital ID. During this transition period, residents should continue to carry alternative physical ID, ensuring a smooth and gradual shift to the Digital Connect ID platform.

The apps are already available for download on Apple and Android devices through their app store. Users must submit current identification and two-factor authentication requirements as part of the sign up process."

E-inhabitant was about 25, maybe 30 years in front of it's time.

Didn't the developers do a runner with the money or something?

One of the entrants into this years DED Fintech challenge was offering something similar.  Linked with Sure and currently running it in one of the UAE states.

Unfortunately they'd need some Govt involvement to get it operational and the most pressing things they've got on the agenda at the moment seems to be stopping the development of anything that the Victorians would deem modern.

Well yes.  That was a thing and I remember the launch party at that building off Peel Road and all the silly banners, but what does it have to do with a replacement for photo ID on peoples phones to save them having to carry photo ID if they want a beer?

Wear a false beard and moustache?

They spent all the money they raised on various schemes, expensive staff etc

as is always the case, you need to look further up the food chain

Sorry, I meant developer (head honcho) of the project, not the techies.

You still here? I thought you were "never going to post again". Or have you just signed into the wrong username by mistake?

Ehabitant was ahead of it's time.  This new thing is backed by the WEF, should rile up the loonies.

Not a bad idea in principle, but where has it come from? Was there a tender?

What new thing?  It’s just a government release saying people might be able to use some existing apps to verify their age in some places, but they haven’t actually bothered to make sure it’s accepted everywhere before suggesting people use it.

Talk of a completely different system from 20 plus years ago that did a completely different thing is slightly confusing.

What can you do with Digital ID?

Buy age restricted items at convenience stores (excluding alcohol).
Surely being able to use it to prove your age when buying alcohol  would be one of the major selling points for young people?

So it would enable you to prove that you are of a sufficient age to purchase say tobacco, but not alcohol. Why?
