The Hon. Member for Rushen, Mr Speaker, to move - That Tynwald notes: a) that the need for a replacement for Castle Rushen High School had been identified by 2016; and b) that a timetable has been produced outlining completion by 2029; and that Tynwald: i) reaffirms its commitment to providing a positive environment for teaching and learning; ii) considers that the physical environment at the school falls short of the positive environment to which Tynwald is committed; iii) does not believe that a completion date by 2029 is acceptable; iv) calls on the Council of Ministers to prioritise resources on delivery of this key capital project; and v) asks the Council of Ministers to bring to Tynwald an expedited timetable for completion of the project, with the timetable being published by the end of May 2024.

It is not like Government have a good recent record on capital projects that have been rushed forward. Having been an MHK since 2006 and since 2016, chair of the public accounts committee, can anyone say what he has achieved to stop reckless spending and poor quality government. Under his watch we have a new boat that only sails if it is not raining or a slightly breezy, An unfinished promenade and the most costly off island project this since the Panama canal, I mean one of his last motions was the auditor general to save money, I don't think the auditor general has saved enough to pay his own salary. So yes, lets rush into a new capital project that will cost millions more than budget for.

Let's not rush we need extensive architect drawings and feasibility studies. About £3,000,000 should cover that. Then an environmental impact study  say another £1.2,000,000.  Nimby assessment £300 000. Buying the land because the government will only have the wrong kind of land£3.7,000,000. Inngage  with a building firm pre building costs easement money £782,000. Build the box cost £9,000,000. Over spend continuity money 31%. Go back for another hand out, finishing expenses. £10,000,000. Snagging list and costs £3.6,000,000. Government broke no money for cs pensions unthinkable. Mothball it on the shelf with stm pkt report and various others.

Didn't they do most of this already a few years back and then shelve it for no discernable reason?

They've been kicking the can for this down the road for a long time.  It really does need someone to try and push it forward asap, before they end up closing the school urgently as it's falling down - exactly like the swimming pool next door.

If they don't let the local MHK's get involved, just take the swimming pool, lets ask who is in charge of the maintenance, which MHK's have been on the board, Lights don't go rusty over night , so much than they fail and are a danger. It not that the corrosive properties of chlorine isn't well known.   Your argument doesn't hold up as it is the local government at fault not DOI this time, so the school won't close down.

I don't think the DOI have anything to do with the swimming pool.

Should have built the new school in ballasalla where the new housing estate is, and then knocked down the old castle Rushen and built the houses there. It was suggested at the time, as Castletown has the shops, pubs and infrastructure required for houses, Ballasalla doesn’t. Schools don’t need it. Simple common sense.

I really don’t understand why anyone would be against the build of a new school. Which is badly needed. If there are capital projects to be done.? This is a priority.
So get off your high horse.

Nobodies against a new school being built, but if there is anything has been learnt in the last few years is don't rush into it, just for southern votes or have their name on a plaque.

This is a much needed project and needs to be prioritised it comes into the news every couple of years and then melts away.   When questioned regarding if it was to have a swimming pool Julie Edge wasn’t sure she obviously has not studied the plans in detail, unbelievable or is it ?   The children from the South deserve better and the longer they drag their collective feet the more it will cost.   Good on Juan I hope he gets things moving it would be great if this government achieved at least one thing of note in their tenure and time is running out.
