Largest dispensing pharmacy on the island - run by robots

This is probably the source:

https://gef.im/news/planning/plans-for-robot-pharmacists-43690/

But if you make an Internet search on "robotic drug dispensing" you will get some hits.

Whenever I go to collect a prescription I have noticed that there is a significant amount of manpower being used to put boxes of tablets into paper bags. That kind of thing can be mechanised.

A significant amount of man power and time!

Always amazes me how it can take so long to put a few tablets into a bag. Unless they are struggling to read the doctors writing.

Dispensing of dispensing chemists by dispensing with automated dispensing

There is one very small reference to robotic dispensing in the business plan (below) saying they are in talks to potentially look at at. This seems primarily to be a very sensible plan to create a centralized distribution chain in the IOM for pharmacy supply. Something Manx Care probably should have done years ago rather than relying on Lloyds and Clear Pharmacy etc to supply their own shops.

Lot going on with this proposal. The wholesaling side with delivery  to the smaller Pharmacies could be useful but visiting Balthane to pick up a personal prescription? Not  so likely?

Hemenslys on Windsor rd, a wonderful Pharmacy, owner operated and three  lovely staff. All paying tax and NI, what's wrong with that?

Sure they maybe putting pills in bags but also a counter, friendly, service with a Human Being, valuable.

Because of the large number of different medicines, it would make sense only for there to be a single building to house  all the mechanical stuff and racks of medicines - as has been suggested in the new item.

There would still be the necessity for packages to be delivered by van from the central warehouse to individual pharmacies.

However, the big liability of a centralised system is that if there is a fire or similar large accident on the site there will be no medicines handed out anywhere on the island for a considerable time.

Distributed systems can be more reliable and are resistant to single-point failures.

I'm retired so automation shouldn't really concern me from a employment point of view but,,,,, I always find it odd that some people would support job losses that could be 'them' next!

......but, maybe we're all retired on MF!!!

Some would suggest that 'some' on MF 'should' be retired!!! 😀

Are you aware of the current issues around recruiting in this are here, in the UK and further afield.

Have you seen how long it takes to get some basic medication on island for the last few years?  Family members who are on regular meds are constantly saying what a faff it is with errors at both the GP and the Pharmacy seeming a regular occurrence

I think direct means that they will have vans on the road like the PO to deliver to peoples homes or retail pharmacies which makes perfect sense especially for the elderly. So no need to visit the facility and equally it won’t be run by robots as claimed at all but they make a small reference to looking at the potential of robotic fulfillment systems. Although I’m sure Fantasy Dave envisaged Blade Runner style replicants delivering your Viagra or his Prozac in drones.

Sure, if you put a request in your local Pharmacy for a repeat 'script it can take 3 4 5 days but the answer is to put your request before you run out????

Alternatively you could travel to your GPs and get a paper copy but that would involve the surgery staff in extra work which would further slow down 'their' service.     Yer pays yer money.................

Hemenslys are fully staffed with wonderful people, why don't  you all change to them!!!
