Hmmmm
13 hours ago, Derek Flint said: The gap is getting narrower. Rates is one of the areas that you can make a significant saving over your UK living costs. I did some calculations last night on UK and IOM income tax. Under 50k there's nothing in it. Above that you've got to be going Gangbusters to notice a real difference. Then factor in your boat and plane travel and it gets negligible again. The island has great qualities but I'm not sure if they will necessarily entice the uplift in population needed. Time to bin income tax? Yes the rates seem to be catching up. Suspect Douglas rates increase will be near the 9 to 10% mark.
Banker
12 hours ago, genericUserName said: Douglas rate payers are effectively subsidised by much of the rest of the island. Since the vast majority of working people travel to Douglas to work at businesses which pay Douglas rates. Lots of big ratepayers are in Braddan eg B&Q , Zurich, Canada life plus loads of others in business parks, snugnourgh trading estate etc

Amadeus
So some LGAs split out the refuse charge from the rates. Wonder what happen if people just paid the rates but not the refuse charge because technically it’s not part of the rates?

It's long overdue that the contract between Govt and SITA/SUEZ in respect of operating the incinerator was reviewed. It appears to be something of a licence to print money and if Govt came up with it would anybody be surprised? Every year there are significant rises in refuse disposal that LAs and their ratepayers are simply expected to suck up with precious little detail as to how they are arrived at. It has become the major component of most Rates demands. 3

Fred the shred
As Banker says Braddan has some big ratepayers that is why Douglas has eyed it up over the years. Jessops folly will also be a big ratepayer , does the Hospital pay rates ?

Moghrey Mie
11 hours ago, Fred the shred said: When Onchan send out rate demands they include a diagram illustrating how much income is applied to outgoings and last year a very large portion of the pie was directed at waste disposal . Every LA seems to mention waste disposal as being a burden if this expense could be tackled in some way it would bring relief to every rate payer on the Island. The DOI is the ultimate example of why it would be an absolute disaster to amalgamate all the LAs into one body. Onchan Commissioners have always preferred incineration over recycling. So now they are paying for it.
