Wonder what happen if people just paid the rates but not the refuse charge because technically it’s not part of the rates? It’s one and the same under the 2006 act. Surely until government decide that user pays for what they produce, a flat rate makes more sense that someone having half price refuse collection because they live in a Victorian house. It starts as council, then goes into committee which allows for longer debate, and then goes back into council for the vote.

So that's getting on for twice the rate of inflation? Maybe you were already all pissed? That will also go straight into the figures for next year's public sector pay demands/negotiations which will invariably be settled @ that figure thus putting pressure on the following year's cycle. Of course the vast majority of the private sector can't hope for rises in those figures so fall further and further behind. Spyk3r
12.57% and we get fortnightly collections, recycling - which lets face it, only some use, unlike the refuse which everyone uses. I guess we need to subsidise the expensive sea wall works, new amenity site (which is quite nice) but gets used by most people in the east of the island - including Santon, Laxey, Malew etc. That means between DCC and Treasury, im likely going to be paying £2k annually for the benefit of living in Douglas... For the avoidance of doubt, the only thing allowed in chamber during sessions is a glass of water. Can’t even have a coffee. And I don’t drink any alcohol in town hall, ever, not even during functions and the like. A lot of things went into this budget as the press release and budget book will show.

Recycling is up massively thanks to the awesome residents of Douglas. It was the right thing to do.

A rise getting on for twice the rate of inflation for Douglas ratepayers? That takes some swallowing. What cuts and economies were considered, any City Hall salary and numbers haircuts? No, of course not. It will have to be some press release and budget book to keep pitchforks in sheds over this.
