what qualification did Mr Yang have to be living here

Sounds like a perfectly valid question considering the Island operates a Work Permit system for non-Manx residents to work on the Island.

I recall the difficulties I had of having a girlfriend move to the Island with me and she struggled like hell to ever get work, she moved back across in the end and me too.

Many sectors are work permit exempt, and the sectors that aren't don't struggle importing people as far as I can see.

There are tens of thousands of white, English speaking immigrants on this island. Blaming one Chinese fella for your girlfriend's inability to get a job just makes no sense at all without a racist agenda.

Well the only time I've ever seen anybody question someone's "qualifications" to live here following a court case is this one.

Seemingly motivated by this gentleman being Chinese and not speaking English.

Either a coincidence or racism.

Nothing racist about it at all.  A man who claims to not speak English, lies through his teeth and declares he owns his wife and that justifies slapping and kicking her doesn't deserve to be allowed to live here. Personally,I'd happily drop him overboard in  the arctic ocean and claim he slipped on a wayward plant pot

Is this something you'd do with all lying wife beaters or just the ones that don't speak English?

I don't believe racism requires violence. This gentleman has been treated unfairly by the OP. Hundreds of people not from here are convicted through the courts each year without them questioning their qualifications to be here.

Oh I think you'll find that there are questions raised on MF whenever someone with a hint of a Funny Foreign Name appears in the Courts.

Obviously if he and his wife were here and working illegally, then it's straightforward and investigation and prosecution needs to take place of their employer(s).  But if they are here on an ICT Visa, as piebaps helpfully linked to, then we need to be looking at these.  These are described as enabling "multinational employers to transfer their existing employees from outside the EEA to their Isle of Man branch for training purposes or to fill a specific vacancy".  Which sounds well and good and you imagine it covering international high-flyers and technical specialists.  But that doesn't really sound like the case with Mr Yang, there's no mention of an employer for example.  If he was valuable enough to be transferred as an existing employee, you think there would be involvement.

If the apparent intention of these visas is being abused and it is being used as a backdoor route to bring in low-paid, exploited workers and their families, then it is unfair on all those trying to get in through more rigorous routes and to those effectively being people trafficked.  And of course it goes against all that talk of attracting high-paid newcomers to the island bringing their skills and involvement.

A walk down Strand street with your ears wide open will reveal that we over run with such people.

If you go to Spain on holiday, do you speak Spanish as you walk in the town???

I have to agree. The perceived number of (obvious) immigrants since the end of the CV fiasco has risen beyond belief as an hour in Tesco or just 10 minutes loitering (without intent) on Strand Street will reveal to any bystander.  The question I repeatedly ask myself is 'what or who (in terms of employment) brought you here and how are you supporting you and your family?'.

It would seem that the hospital is one such employer bringing in a number of extra-UK workers but in such numbers as seem apparent?  There's also no absence of unidentified (to me, at least)  languages from more questionable European origins as well.

to single out one because he's Chinese is pure racism.

You have a rather perverse view of the meaning of racism but seems to suit your apparent world-view.
