Protestors outside Micro Gaming

According to the latest Public Health England report on gambling, 2.2 million people are 'at-risk' gamblers and “about 25 million adult gamblers boost the UK gambling industry”... Unsurprisingly, PokerStars owner Flutter Entertainment reported “group revenue rose 24.7% to $11.79bn (£9.32bn/€10.87bn) in 2023”.

Also, "A research review by Public Health England estimated that gambling-related harms cost society at least £1.27 billion a year and the direct costs to government of criminal activity related to gambling is c. £162.5 million annually".

Should the gambling industry be required to spend many more of their billions on helping people with gambling addiction? IMHO – A resounding yes!

Yes they should and they’re not doing enough. Many firms in the IOM give pathetic amounts as their required annual contribution. Others are better but it still needs more.

That's pretty shameful and quite sad really.

This is where the GSC are failing as they’re not checking that firms are contributing to addiction services as they’re supposed to under governance requirements. Previously there was an annual fee on all licensed companies which was then passed on to addiction charities, however the GSC in their wisdom scrapped the fee claiming it made us uncompetitive!

And then they realised that they could recoup any losses now via the FSA fining financial firms for not ticking the correct boxes.

Of course it's just a coincidence that they have now found this new revenue stream when the Govt is skint.

I suppose you think McDonalds should sponsor fat people at Weightwatchers ?  How far do you want to go, there are so many addictions.    People have to take responsibility for their own actions somewhere along the line.

Well McDonald’s do contribute via VAT on all those burgers & fries you consume!!

McDonald's, like all junk food, is ultra-processed food that “adds a lot of fat, refined carbohydrates, salt, and sugar to the diet” linked to obesity and increased risk of heart disease and cancer. Other jurisdictions (e.g., Denmark, Australia, Malaysia) have implemented so called ‘fat tax’ to discourage "unhealthy diets" to offset the economic costs of obesity.

VAT is specifically levied on alcohol and tobacco to increase the price and to control/ reduce the demand...and of course to increase revenue income to Treasury. Why should online gambling be exempt from VAT for the IOM registered companies?

And London is not corrupt in any way shape or form...

You're having a laugh!

It's got the Palace of Westminster right at it's heart!

Another tory MP resigned yesterday caught bang to rights.

Let's hope the tories get decimated at the next election. Although historically that was one legionaire in ten.

Mind you, there are still plenty of selfish greedy individuals about, Thatchers children, who will vote with their wallets and put an X in the tory box. This is despite over a million children living in poverty, an NHS in crisis, schools falling down, record levels of taxation etc etc.

As I live and breathe it has to be a toryboy raising his head above the parapet and trying to smear that nice Kier Starmer's party...

I wonder if Degsey will get a mention? Of course, they haven't been in power for fourteen years so it's bound to be low-level local stuff if at all...

Indeed:

Benton lost the Tory whip in April 2023 after suggesting to undercover reporters at the Times that he would be willing to break lobbying rules for money. The MP had offered to lobby ministers on behalf of the gambling industry and leak a confidential policy document for up to £4,000 a month.

Though in the way of such things he fought on till the last minute to retain his salary as he didn't think the rules should apply to him.  And when he was caught it was clearly because MPs are used to the industry providing such goodies for them:

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/apr/06/gambling-industry-increased-spending-on-mps-tenfold-in-five-years-data-shows

And though the Guardian didn't say so (they love the Starmer crew) the current Labour leadership is even keener to take gambling donations and jobs.
