Government: 'We recognise it's a very challenging time for hospitality'

Quite a number of posters commenting on this latest closure on FB who are claiming that a VAT reduction for hospitality is within the gift of the Govt.

The gift possibly yes, but not the will of Treasury.

It's not in the gift of IOMG without them breaking the VAT agreement with the UK.  Any specific local reduction will have to be negotiated with the UK Treasury and then legislated.  It certainly won't be allowed on anything that could be 'exported' in any way and the UK might simply turn it down because it doesn't want to increase pressure withing its own jurisdiction.

I suspect the real problems that the sector is feeling is as much to do with staffing as anything.  There simply aren't the people on the Island who are willing to work low-paid and/or zero-hour contract jobs.  The latest Labour Market report shows the biggest number of vacancies in Other Catering & Entertainment (156) with only 30 people in that field shown as unemployed[1].  Vacancies are up 50% on last year, even though they're down a bit in most sectors.

[1]  These may not even be looking for work as some of those drawing JSA may already have a job lined up they haven't started yet.  A quarter of the unemployed at the end of February had been unemployed for less than a month and over 80% for less than a year.  At such low figures a lot of those are 'churn'.

Sounds good but they're too stupid to realise the affect draining the public's wallet has on the economy.

Their only priority is funding themselves, the £600M+ PS wage bill and their pensions, to include the £40M annual gap. Everything is being sacrificed at this altar, there is no long term strategy for funding.

Hopes for Crogga appear to have evaporated, the projected visitor figures have yet to show the sort of growth needed to reach 500k pa. There is little else on the horizon likely to meet the revenue requirements, so the only recourse is to milk the public.

The here and now is the only thing on Govt's mind.

Energising, enabling, granting, cutting costs, investing?

But not interfering?

Not sure where you are coming from Derek.

I see the minister, small m. Was on the radio a day or so ago saying that starship enterprise will "offer advice to any business in the hospitality sector to help them"

I am not in that sector             but WTAF

What business person is going to DFE to get advice on how to run their business?

FFS. Someone get a grip on the rock, how that minister could say that with a straight face beggars belief.

Also to add, they are bang in the middle of a business park so footfall at their doorstep with MT MUA and numerous other business's how could they fail? Go into Newsbeat up in the same area and its rammed at lunchtime.

Anyone setting up a cafe or food business these days  really needs to either provide parking  on site  or have access to parking nearby , the Corporation and the DOI are slowly killing Douglas  haunting the motorist at £60 a pop  , and in particular castle and Strand street ,different a few years ago when they could rely on the footfall of tourists and a summer season to bolster the income ,

The government always come out with we know people/businesses are struggling but then never seem to provide any solutions

Their 'solution' is raise the cost of everything.

What solutions would you provide if you were in government. Rabbit out of hat? Magic money tree?

I was in a small town in Belgium last week, Tielt. We had a couple of meals in a cafe/bar, one of which was Spaghetti Bolognese. It was well presented, served professionally and was substantial and tasty. 15 Euros.

Flash forward to this week in a well respected local restaurant, same dish, half as much in quantity, sloppy, unattractive and spaghetti had been replaced by fuselli, £15 as part of a £20 lunch menu, tasted ok mind you. Service wasn't bad but nothing special.

We either have to accept that we are crap at most things, or make an effort to be better and stop moaning. The Belgian cafe was family run, quite busy but the staff were very friendly and clearly enjoyed giving service. I don't think we have that mindset on the island, nor in Britain if the truth be told, we just don't have a service culture and seem to judge those who serve as being minions rather than professionals.

I went to a couple of meetings with these clowns headed up by Hooper the Hopeless. They could be less interested in the problems facing hospitality. You know there's no chance when Government commission PWC for a report then take absolutely no notice of the recommendations contained in it
