2023 water report

Recommended Posts

The above report is out in full on FB , in summary all the beaches range from passable to good and excellent except Peel and Laxey which are a no,no.    This is disgusting expecting visitors to come here and endanger their health by swimming in the sea at these two locations is not on, the locals hopefully are aware of the situation.   The sad bit is both Laxey and Peel have nice beaches and promenades, full of character and good food outlets to hand.    There have been excuses and more excuses by the MUA stating difficulty acquiring land and also objections which have held matters up.   Not good enough this is a serious health issue and should be prioritised.    Until it is there should be huge notices erected stating the dangers of swimming at these two places.

There's a reason why Laxey and Peel are not 'designated bathing waters'.

'Applications were also received for the designation of Peel, Fenella and Laxey; due to insufficient sewerage infrastructure these were not progressed. The Department will liaise with the Local Authorities when the necessary improvements to the sewerage infrastructure have been approved by planning and construction has commenced.'

Local authorities have to apply for designation. Laxey and Peel were refused because of sewage problems.

Maybe the commissioners should put up notices to this effect and inform people.

Both locations are being dealt with and timescales are in the hands of planning and equipment supplies.

It should have been dealt with years ago, but as things stand at the moment I don’t know what more people expect them to do.

Its hardly a health risk, they just aren’t as clean as the others but still better than we all swam in decades ago.

Will be sorted in a couple of years.  Until it is people can make their own decisions.  Let’s be honest the vast majority of people never go in the sea anyway so it’s only a small Issue for a very small number of people.

MUA have been trying to get the sewage plants built for some time but the local nimbys always object to the location, COMIN should just use national interest and tell them it’s going here now Foff!!
Peel & laxey should be forced to put up signs saying water unfit for bathing and keep out.

That's not true now is it?  Look at peel today, little bit of sun and there were loads of young kids swimming in literal shit.

Let's not forget, people reported actual shit and sanitary products washing up on the beach and the MUA LIED again and said it wasn't due to a sewage leak.

“Loads” is still a tiny percent of the population, and guess what, they won’t be sick tomorrow.  They will be absolutely fine.

How do you know they will be fine ? Are you a medical Specialist?   don’t talk such rubbish.

How often to you hear of people being ill after having a paddle in the sea?

I have friends who are in the sea all around the island every day.

I am not sure they are mentally sound, because it’s bloody freezing, but they certainly suffer no negative physical effects.

We need to put things in perspective.  It’s not ideal in Peel or Laxey at the moment but it’s better than it was anywhere around the island or probably in the Uk 50 years ago, and certainly no worse than thousands of other places.  There will be people in the world who drink water worse than that every day and are OK.

Finally, and the biggest point is that people have the choice if they go on there or not and all the info is publicly and easily available.

They have a choice if there is a very large notice up warning people that the sea in that area is shit infested.   They do not have a choice if they are unaware i.e. an innocent holiday maker.

Exactly, take no notice of Dave I know a guy who had to have half of his stomach removed after a training swim in Peel bay!

Really?

In which case that should be heavily publicised to make people aware.  Especially if it wasn’t immediately after heavy rainfall when the water quality is known to be much lower, even in Ramsey, Douglas etc.

Pretty sure it made headline news in the local rag.

Any links?  I would genuinely like to make this much more publicly known if it’s a fact.

Having said that, a training swim is very different to a kid paddling and again I say it impacts a tiny percentage of the population and that everyone who does training swims should really know how to check water quality.  It’s not like it’s hidden and not publicly available.
