Yes, St George’s must be costing DfE a fortune and without a great effort by DfE King Gaming would never have chosen a small wet expensive island to operate from.

When will the politicians learn that most rich people choose the island for questionable reasons beyond even tax. At least Whitaker and Hemings had some substance to their money and operations but lots of those being courted or choosing the IoM you’d be right to be a bit sceptical. Small island, big fish, lots of jobs as bait, easy political access etc.

I wouldn’t be so sure on that conclusion that this will reflect badly on the IOM. Philippe Auclair, who I think broke the story publicly;

“The decisiveness of the Isle of Man authorities in this matter is in stark contrast with the laissez-faire of neighbouring jurisdictions”

Well I wasn't sure at all.  That's why I used words such as "suspect" and "may" and "I don't know".  But Auclair was only picking up on the statement issued by the GSC when it was issued Wednesday evening (the story was actually broken by finlo at the start of this topic).. and is presuming that the police action is related to sports gambling in some way.  That's part of the companies' business and the area he has done so much investigative work in, but it may not be the main motivation for any action.

I can't find the police statement yet, but you can reconstruct most of it from the IOM Newspapers' article:

Seven people have been arrested on the Isle of Man as part of an investigation linked to a gaming company.

The arrests were made following a ‘series’ of police raids at two properties on the island on Wednesday.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has confirmed that the seven individuals have subsequently been released on bail pending.

According to the force, the raids formed part of a ‘wider’ fraud and money laundering investigation linked to King Gaming Ltd. In a statement issued this morning, a spokesman for the Isle of Man Constabulary confirmed that officers executed warrants on business premises on Victoria Road and Bucks Road in Douglas.

The spokesman added: ‘In relation to those warrants seven people were arrested and subsequently released on police bail.

‘A number of people found on the premises at Victoria Road were subject of further immigration interviews involving the IOM Immigration Services and those enquiries are ongoing.

‘This activity is part of a wider fraud and money laundering investigation being led by the IOM Constabulary’s Proactive International Money Laundering and Investigation Team in relation to King Gaming Ltd IOM.

‘Enquiries are being conducted in close liaison with partners within the Islands AML/CFT regulatory and intelligence network to fully investigate these matters.

‘The Constabulary will not be making any further comment in relation to this matter.’

It's interesting that there's no reference made to any cooperation with bodies outside the Island, though that doesn't mean it didn't happen.  As I suspected there immigration aspects to this and both premises were raided (though not anywhere else it seems).

According to FOI 3578738 St George's Court is costing the taxpayer £453,676.00 per year. A bargain considering that most civil servants seem to operate via the 2 days in office / 3 day work from home model.

With the VIP Bar, Spa and pool, Karaoke Room, Penthouse Suite etc; sounds like it could have been the perfect new HQ for Govt and the 100s of new Civil Servant jobs being endlessly created.

One could certainly imagine one or two MHKs in the hot tub with a few bottles of champers, congratulating themselves on their success, a little like Cannes a few years back.

But we've had enough MHKs and hot tub material in the past...

Don't even think about posting that picture. This is a family forum.

One thing I do admire about MF, regardless of all its bickering, is that normally MF is first to break any news on this island. The so called Media only copy or get it’s stories from here and in this instance it’s obviously outed the Bastard Squad to release a statement on the matter, otherwise I’m sure they would have loved to keep this information under their hats.

What amazes me is the regular denials and deflection on the forum that the breaking is usually met with until it becomes undeniable...

The net is closing....or the Moneyval arrival is imminent - high profile headline making enforcement

Tick in the box

I think Moneyval is only interested in money laundering elements, and nothing else, so unless there are money laundering charges, prosecutions and convictions etc, it won't tick any boxes.
