On the Buses

Not everyone is as important as you and can afford infinite data.

These people might like to access the internet too on a long and otherwise monotonous bus journey.

You seem to use "it's 2024" to justify your strange opinions quite regularly I've noticed.

I find it hard to believe that people who use their phone to fill tine on a bus journey don’t have a decent data plan or aren’t capable of downloading stuff to their phone.

Anyway, at least you made an effort to justify it.

Incidentally, the bus I was on today had working wifi.

I do know for sure that the driver situation is so bad that some managers are out covering driving shifts at the weekends.

…and those managers are taking all the cruise passengers out on their jollies. Plenty of nice tips apparently. Not going down well with other drivers seemingly. Added to the fact that they are very short of drivers full stop.

That is very believable 😂

The current crisis lays squarely at the feet of two retirees enjoying fat pensions. Bernard Moffatt for successfully negotiating drivers wages to being higher than a Nurse, and then Ian Longworth for going in heavy handed once the scandal came to the public’s attention.

Now we have fewer people willing to take on the responsibility for the lives of dozens on passengers when earning not a lot more than some pimply student flipping burgers in McDonalds..simple.

They are short staffed, currently recruiting and a private company serviced the cruise ship.   That is the answer from the DOI today it is a pity this explanation and reason took so long to surface unless it took them all weekend to think it up.

Recruiting my arse. The only thing on the job centre website is for a bank Driver - no information of course, just a URL for jobtrain ad (beats me why they can't just put in a link).

If you do manage to copy and paste the URL , you'll discover they're actually looking for a diver 😀.

Also private hires spotted in various places around the island this weekend - it doesn't matter who was doing the cruise ship job, public service should trump private hire whatever it is.

Not sure you can blame Moffatt for doing his job well, more the people he was negotiating with.

Longworth on the other hand. I guess you reap what you sow.

Ironically enough, after Longworth retired the first time and then came back as a consultant, he also did a bit of driving too.

Reputedly getting paid his consultant's hourly rate for driving busses - many times in excess of the drivers he'd claimed were overpaid a few short years before.

Speaks volumes of the integrity of the clowns we've got running the place.

This is symptomatic of exactly what people were predicting 15 years ago when the VAT thing hit and they were right. IoM has simply become a place of survival of the biggest (that mainly being Govt, to the detriment of everybody else), look after yourself, grab as much as you can. More especially and importantly, preservation of entitlement, again with Govt in particular.

The whole culture of the place has changed and the most obvious impact has been on public services as we are continuing to see. What it will take to stop the decline is anybody's guess but it's certainly ongoing.

Yes poor old Mrs Cottier who needed to get to Tesco on Saturday so she can eat this week isn’t a high tipper like the cruise passengers so fuck her. This government and many of its workers are an absolute disgrace. Any more announcements from Bus Vannin or the DOI explaining what really went on behind their “operational issues”? No? Funny that.
