There is even a photo of Derek Flint. Bonus.

"People are twice as likely to be killed or seriously injured on the Isle of Man's roads than they are in England, Manx government statistics have shown.

An average of 81.2 people per 100,000 were hurt or died in crashes, compared to England's 40.8 from 2015 to 2017."

What a pointless statistic.

Can we see one for just the UKs b roads and rural country roads, because if you are including A roads and motorways it’s completely useless info

“Former police inspector Derek Flint said a "grown-up debate" was needed over road safety.

He said the island's "road racing culture" meant people "come and use our roads pretty much as a playground for two weeks every year for the TT".

Lol.  Some of the worst driving I have seen is the supercar club that Derek brings over.

Ooi, and in case you were wondering, KSIs on the signs means Killed or Seriously Injured(s) at that point. I was for a while. Wondering that is, not KSIed. Interesting really, for example 50 KSIs  in 5 years seems very high.

There's a map in every Chief Constable's Annual Report - or rather the Charts and Tables supplement which is where you go if you want actual information rather than pretty pictures (they had to be split off as all those numbers made Cregeen's head hurt).  Here's the latest one from the 2022-23 Report:

image.png.0323f5b8a0f2fe764be541c0bb631602.png

(it's zoomable for greater detail if you follow the link).  It doesn't split between serious and slight injuries, but there are total numbers for the whole Island (see previous page of link).  I've tabulated the figures for the last six years from various CC Reports here:

  2017-18 2018-19 2019-20 2020-21 2021-22 2022-23
Fatal 3 7 3 3 5 2
Serious 41 44 38 19 39 147
Slight 176 160 128 104 126
Damage Only 645 554 519 450 479 488
Animal 21 17 18 21 32 31
Total 886 782 706 597 681 668

For some bizarre reason they combined the Serious and Slight figures last year.  Judging from previous years the percentage of serious is around 22-23% of the total - though it was lower in the Covid year of 20-21.

Would an average of ten serious accidents a year be plausible for the Mountain Road?  Possibly if it's for the whole of it, though you would think that is stretching the idea of a Black Spot to its limits.

Easily, this discussion has been on here before. I reckon as a mountain road user daily that there can easily be an average of 2 incidents a week up there, not always serious or involving injury (thanks to modern car safety features) but certainly 1 vehicle "offs" and other occurrences.

I think I tallied nearly 40 in 8 months a couple of years ago. Cars on the hillsides, fresh skid marks running off the road, lumps out of banking, demolished fences, even a lamp post snapped in two at the Bungalow crossing on the Laxey side. Mostly occurring during AM and PM commuter traffic but a fair share of late nighters too.

Per 100,000 of population presumably, although how many of the 81.2 weren't part of that population?

So all the signs say 50 KSIs in last five years? They're different to the old ones you used to see then.

I have run that through google translate, and am none the wiser.

Can you try again in English please?

But I think La Colombe means killed or seriously injured.

It's not my acronym. It's the police's.
