I would institute a review of every job that becomes vacant when the holder leaves or retires to see if it is necessary to fill the position with a presumption not to

That would require about an extra 20 staff.

Maybe unions will reduce their 8% pay demands now they realize that jobs may be lost to cut wages costs

It won’t happen, not when you have weak willed politicos looking over their shoulders, scared to make really unpopular decisions for fear of not being reelected in 2026. As usual it will end up as a Manx Muddle, kicking the can down the road.

We really should be putting a stop on any new recruitment outside health/atc/police.

Defa are the worst culprits, we have a team of upland rangers....a brand new farm carbon manager...

privatised or outsourced

Privatisation and outsourcing has never and will never save money. It’s a great way of “reducing headcount”, but the expenditure just goes into another budget line.

Definitely more sensible than firing huge chunks of the PS, as others seem to advocate. But it does rather lead us back to the same situation we had last time; the front line staff don’t get replaced but the upper tiers stay where they are. The airport and ATC staffing is the most obvious example of this.

What do you expect to happen? Do you expect the carbon to just (checks notes) farm itself with no carbon farm management? Madness!

I can’t wait for part three where he goes youth hosteling with Chris Eubank.

These are the two relevant slides. The financial management will mean different things to different people: notably the ones who will keep their roles and the ones who won’t.

What is the public sector conference he refers to later in the year? It looks like it should be quite a MAGA event with lots of civil servants in red hats chanting for Andy to make the IOM Great Again at the Villa Marina!

Depends - it releases pension costs for a start. And if the system already exists it can be very cheap to do. Driver and vehicle licensing is an example of an opportunity

Some copy and paste from the new advert for Chief Executive and Town Clerk for Ramsey.

I have no issue with the salary, but the rest of it is pretty spectacular.  Extra leave for evening meeting and a massive pension contribution.

The incremental salary scale for the post will be based on a five point range from £75,571 to £82,539 (salary shown represents NJC Point 45+20% to NJC Point 49+20%), with increments applied on the anniversary of appointment.

The employee’s pension contribution will be 7.2% of gross salary, with a further 27% employer contribution as part of the Isle of Man Local Government Superannuation Scheme.

The annual leave entitlement is 25 working days, but the applicant may be entitled to additional days if he/she has continuous service, immediately prior to the appointment, with other local authorities and/or central government.

The post holder is entitled to an additional 4 working days leave to compensate for attendance at meetings which are held in the evenings, and to public and concessionary paid holidays each year (subject to variation in Easter), details of which can be given on request.”

Ramsey ratepayers also have the "luxury" of paying for a full-time Deputy Town Clerk who may well be on more than the TC due to the older T&Cs and remuneration for extra responsibilities.

Please also note the 25 days leave entitlement details with "additional days" for continuous service, not quite the 21 days that some on these boards were trying to suggest was the staple for PS a couple of days ago...

I am still reeling at four days for a few evening meetings.

On 80k anywhere else you just suck up the extra hours in evening and weekends plus the early starts.  You would be laughed out of town in our place if you expected formal days off for extra hours worked.  People might come in late on a day if they were working into the evening, but would never expect a day off which is basically just another to add onto your holidays.
