Euros

The 'misleading narratives on social media' might be me, although the line "The potential screening of the European Championships was omitted from the schedule following feedback at early meetings with key stakeholders in January" suggests not.

Anyway, I've come around to the idea of the football not being on in the square. A Euro Free zone. Should be popular with some.

I wonder who the stakeholders were? Certainly not the rate payers.

And the paragraph:

There are a significant number of licensed premises in the town that have already confirmed their intention to screen the football, and we hope that they may benefit from local custom.

suggests who the 'stakeholder' might be.  After all, despite the George colonising a large part of the available area, you can watch  in the Square without having to pay H&B for any of your booze - and many do.  Though the whole thing seem to be paid for by Bushy's and it may just be that the owners weren't that interested.

Anyway here's the rest of the big screen events:

Upcoming events include:

- The T20 Cricket World Cup & Ladies Day at Ascot

- The Tour de France, the British Grand Prix F1, and Wimbledon

- The Open

- The 2024 Paris Olympics

and they do say:

If a home nation progresses to the final, other options remain available as was the case with the historic Women’s World Cup final last August and these will be considered by the Board in due course.

Any public showing of a sporting event, the broadcast rights of which are with a third party, has to have a licence from the rights holder. Neither the  company that owns the screen that the Commissioners operate, nor the Commissioners, have a licence ( which they’d have to pay for )  to show the Euros. For them to do so without a licence would be both criminal and a breach of copyright.

Roger, you missed the important bit of the statement, and concentrated on others, which may, or May not, be here or there.

The screen is operated by the Commissioners, but it is not owned by the town and football is not a sport that is within the current scope of the agreement to operate the screen.”

So did they have this licence when they were showing the rugby world cup?

I know of a pub that has set up a screen in their beer garden do they need this licence?

Go read the article. It sets out what events they have permission to exhibit.

As for a pub, yes, they can’t legally just use a home sky subscription.

All the matches are on BBC snd ITV.  No subscription required.

You’re confusing the right to receive the broadcast ( which may be free to air  but requires a TV licence) and the right to exhibit it to a public audience ( which includes open air, in a pub, hotel etc ) which requires a paid for fee, in fact if there is any music used in the broadcast it requires 3. MPLC, PRS and MPS.

It also depends on what permissions you have from the equipment owner, as to what they licence you to exhibit. Also, their feed may not be via BBC/ITV signal, but a separately licensed paid for sub feed
