Albert Tatlock
This should be a Tynwald decision, a political decision - and not an emotional one limited to one nepotistic, self-serving department. 1
Non-Believer
Listening to the analysis on MR this morning (which was Phil Gawne so it may not count for much), the report claims that there may be as many as 50 "superfluous teachers" in the Dept. DESC haven't denied this but claim that they are carrying out their own review into numbers. They are adamant that no schools will be closing though.... Harry Lamb
The savings in secondary schools recommended by operating a more 'efficient' curriculum would in effect mean removing many practical subjects because it requires every class to have 27 pupils. ( The OGAT model automatically assumes that there will be 27 pupils allocated to each period and that this is the ultimate efficient class size.) Many labs and workshops / kitchens would not allow for this. Only a few A level subjects would be offered. It would be a very poor deal for our children.
Banker
Reasonable argument from Julie, also valid point on where are savings coming from? https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/former-education-minister-would-have-backed-school-closures/
Ringy Rose
15 hours ago, Roger Mexico said: The proposed 'savings' are just based on the most mechanical applications of what are English formulas to a particular year's figures with no real consideration for geography or demography or consideration if the English targets are suitable. There may be some scope for primary closures (South Douglas in particular has been over-provisioned for some time) but this isn't the way to work out how to do them. I’d love to know how much we paid for this report, because the content isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. In typical Tynwald style it’ll probably be a million quid. The whole basis of the report seems to be that England had primary class sizes of 30 therefore the Isle of Man should too. Even though class sizes of 30 are largely acknowledged as being way too big. The supposed maximum capacity of some of those primary schools seems a bit off too- there’s no way Scoill Vallajeelt could fit another 150 pupils into their building without sticking some of them on the roof. Same with efficiencies. Scoill Vallajeelt’s headteacher will, from September, also be the headteacher of St Thomas’, but we’ll save money by putting 150 additional pupils into the school. Aye right you are.

Non-Believer
Bride school recommended for closure. Hasn't it been closed for 10+ years? The last intake was about 4 kids from memory.
