Who is at fault here then?  You would think they would be capable of working together to make sure important events like this went ahead.

Chris Kelly Memorial Rally will not run in 2024

The Directors of Manx Autosport have to announce that the Club has not gained consent from the Department of Infrastructure to run the Chris Kelly Memorial Rally in September 2024.

The application was submitted on 18 October 2023 and the Club received a reply in early March 2024 after it had requested an update on the submission. The Department gave the Club three weeks to re-submit all the information required to run the rally and in the Department’s opinion it was incomplete and not acceptable. The information contained in the application included an Event Safety Plan, an Event Risk Assessment, an overall stage plan and the application form.

The Club did not submit a Traffic Management Plan and Stage Safety Plan as it had not received an acceptance for the proposed route.

The Club followed the protocol that it has used several times with the exception that it started the application many months earlier following a request to do so from the Department of Infrastructure.

On 30 March 2024 the Club re-submitted its amended plans to the Department but this was also rejected, on 14 May 2024, for the same reasons.

At no point have the Directors and team at Manx Autosport been made aware of what in, particular, the Department was unhappy with, but the Club’s application emphasised that all its documents were live and could and would be improved upon or extended as and when required.

Since the announcement the Department has indicated that it would consider replying to the application within a couple of weeks. It is worth remembering that the events are put together by volunteers from both on the island and the UK.

In conclusion, Manx Autosport is disappointed that so many volunteers, competitors and Isle of Man businesses will feel let down by this decision.

Issued by Paul Lawrence (07778 547918) on behalf of Manx Auto Sport.

It looks like yet another incident of red tape (and if there's none there, we'll create some anyway, just in case).

However, these days IoMG also displays remarkable lack of enthusiasm when it comes to enabling any events (especially relatively big/popular ones) that it is not "organising" itself and more pointedly, do not result in direct revenue to it. The church food market during TT this year being another example.

In short, if the Govt hasn't got its fingers in it or isn't receiving direct financial benefit from it, then "it" will receive little help.

If this event is lost it will be a great disappointment to organisers, participants and followers alike, not to mention the blow to the hospitality and accommodation industry.

To be fair though. If it was a cycling event someone would have creamed their pants to close down half the IOM for it. Rallying has been out of favour with the DOI for years now.

I have a feeling of déjà vu.

Didn't this happen with a different rally last year.

high time a few heads were knocked together ! apart from TT , which saved  many businesses from going under  ,its been a disastrous season  particularly for the food and hospitality trade  and its going to be one hell of a long winter  , so lets see some leadership   from the top   before these events are welcomed elsewhere  never to return

same with the vintage bike event  opposite the Villa Marina   so successful last year and attracted thousands of people into town , but scrapped this year because DOI have allowed the sea wall builders the entire area alongside the war memorial as their builders compound , why the construction of the  wall could not wait until after the MGP is beyond belief , but I guess the public and those trying to earn a living from businesses don't matter anymore

To be fair.  I am not sure building a sea wall in storm season is a great idea.

its only a few years ago you could not put up scaffolding or carry out building or major painting  works on Douglas promenade after end of may and until the end of September ,  standards have dropped and thats why Douglas has become a shit hole and disgrace as a summer seasonal tourist destination ,  its generally November when the gales start  ,and how long does it takes these guy's to build a simple  wall  no  scaffolding , digging of footings required   few steel reinforcing bars and a concrete  moulded wall ,and I have yet to see anyone properly working on it yet  for longer than a morning
