Banker
I see Labour are expected to release non violent, sexual and terrorist offenders to reduce overcrowding, talk of release after 45/40% of sentences rather than 50% & more non custodial sentences. Should we be following suit to reduce overcrowding & the considerable expense of keeping loads of drug offenders etc in prison, many could just be deported as not local.

Much depends on whether you think offenders should be in prison. Very few offenders are imprisoned without going through the range of non-custodial court disposals and subsequently re-offending. Courts decide what sentences are appropriate, after taking pre-sentence reports into consideration. Making executive decisions to curtail sentences imposed by the courts because of overcrowding is just an indication of the failure of the executive to provide sufficient spaces and provide the public protection the court originally deemed necessary. It’s desperation politics resulting from failure, not an indication of good sense or enlightenment. The Criminal Justice System should have as its first priority, public protection. It has failed to put this at the forefront of its thinking for many years. Nothing has changed.

It's a good idea provided there is suitable help for people who have addictions.

Banker
Uk now announced prisoners released after 40% sentences unless certain crimes and also considering decriminalizing drug possession. If we followed suit it would help Jurby overcrowding
