Another interesting snippet which demonstrates how the Constabulary deteriorated under Gary Roberts. Morale dropped, retention issues increased and nothing was done to make the police an attractive career in terms of pay or culture. The CC busied himself pontificating in his annual reports about the challenges the Constabulary faced and handing out meaningless awards to officers doing their jobs but the major issues were left unaddressed. The current CC is going to have some task in turning things around.

32k starting pay sounded pretty good to 40 people? They don't say why 37 were not suitable

A decent salary and the only requirement (as far as I see) is GCSE English. Pretty much everyone qualifies for that.

The plus point is that the police did not hold back from handing out the "fail" certificates.

The police seem to have an increasingly negative reputation in the community, tasering the drunk guy in pulrose a few months ago and being arses on social media won't help.

At least you get to practise active shooter drills in the local schools and play dress up in the latest toys.

Just the way of the world police forces across the world are seen as negative.

I know some people who have applied and failed the fitness test (several times).  I'm not sure how challenging the requirements are, but put it this way, I would have been very confident making a medium paced jog get away from that person.

A friend's wife also applied last year and was told some weird conflicting bollox that initially she wasn't confident/authoritarian enough, then told she wasn't empathetic enough.

Questions on the test.
do you like guns?

were you bullied at school?

 If yes to both. Congratulations.

This is all pretty much nonsense.  Roberts was pretty vocal about morale and retention, but there was little he could do about either because he doesn't control overall pay or budget.  Police pay is normally tied to that in the UK.  And the Police have been doling out 'meaningless awards' to themselves for as long as I can remember.  In that sense the rest of the the bureaucratic structure is just catching up with them.

As for culture, it doesn't seem to have improved much under the new Chief Constable unless you're a fan of police entrapment and waving guns around for no particular reason.  If police budgets are being exceeded we can see the reasons and if you're trying clear the streets of cocaine a gramme at a time, it's going to be an infinitely long and expensive process.   Virtue signalling and security theatre may impress the politicians, but the public may be less so.

It's not surprising that the police are having problems recruiting in an employment environment where, for demographic and financial reason, vacancies outnumber jobseekers massively.  The only surprise is that they managed to attract 40 to apply - and then rejected nearly all of them.  Possibly the rest failed the 'meaningless business-babble' test if HR were involved.
