Why would I go somewhere in my spare time to buy shampoo?

I will happily go to a shop with personal service for a product that needs a bit of a hands on experience or professional input and pay a premium for it.

Shampoo?  I will have that waiting for me when I get home for less outlay.  Why wouldn’t I?

I use Amazon for stuff that I cannot easily get here, not ordinary stuff like shampoo, unless it is a specialist shampoo.  Buying ordinary stuff that you can easily get here is just bonkers.

Don't get me started on fecking bottled water, why on earth are bottles of stuff that is perfectly good coming out of most people's tap being shipped around the world?

Buying stuff online that you can easily get locally is not bonkers if it’s cheaper for exactly the same thing with free delivery though right??!! Unless you like paying more just for the sake of it?!!

No, but it has to be significantly cheaper to make sense.  You know carbon footprint and all that crap.

Taking the shampoo example, I would buy a concentrated shampoo online because I am not basically shipping water which we have in abundance here, but not any old shampoo because it is cheaper.

It is just my personal approach to being a responsible consumer really.  The ordinary stuff is already being transported here, why not buy it here rather than have your individual bottle of shampoo  packaged and shipped no matter who pays?

Other things, such as a dietary supplement that I had to get for a pet, was substantially cheaper online, but also not heavy so not impacting from a transportation point of view, so I had a subscription set up.

The issue with water, and primarily I mean bottles of drinking water, is the weight of shipping something that is available from a tap in most countries with a reasonable infrastructure,  while there are many places in the world which still have to drink untreated water from a well or stand pipe.  Just a symbol of gross consumerism.

When I was a child the very concept of paying for something that was basically free and perfectly safe and available would have been risible.  In fact, I can remember when asking for a fizzy drink being told to have some 'corporation pop'.

"Alexa, send me everything i want"

Yes, it’s brilliant.

Using the shampoo example of I walk out if the shower and think I might need shampoo in a few days I tell Alexa and two days later when I get home it’s in the box outside the house where the postman puts stuff.

Driving somewhere or out and about and remember I could do with something, ask Alexa.

It makes my life easier.

Why on earth would I bother to have to remember I need it next time I am in a shop, and likely pay more for it?

Shampoo is a poor example really y.  I haven’t used that since before Alexa was invented, but the same applies to any general consumables.

^ what a wanker

Is technology and the modern world a bit advanced for you?  Maybe don’t click on a thread about people ordering stuff from Amazon if the concept of making life more straightforward confuses you?

If I were a shopworker facing redundancy, I'd POUR it through your letterbox!!!

Presumably in your new job as a delivery driver?

Although they will be gone in a few years as delivery drones and bots take over.

Adapt or die.  Adapt a business or learn new skills.

Yes I buy a lot of stuff online where the local shopping experience offers no benefit.  The example used was a bottle of shampoo.  What do I gain from going to a soulless shop to buy that?

I also buy a lot less stuff from chain stores and supermarkets than I would have done 15 years ago.  Farm shops, butchers, fish shops etc.

If a business can offer an experience and service that can’t be matched online then they will prosper.  We could have had blinds and curtains online recently but instead spend time in Talbots and with them visiting the house to spend more to have them custom made and as we want.

There is a place for online and a place for face to face interactions.  Businesses need to adapt.  Look at Jac Stores locally, a superb example of blending online and physical stores and expanding into Peel as we speak while other similar businesses who haven’t adapted complain about people shopping online and how quiet they are.
