IOMs economic strategy in tatters?

Britain has a gambling minister (the UK changed the name from gaming to gambling commission in 2007) and the IoM has a Gambling Supervision Commission, but the words gaming and egaming are still spread liberally around the digitalisleofman website - and other places.

The use by the gov. of gaming as a euphemism for gambling annoys me.

The UK Gambling Commission site has help references, but the IoM equivalent does not.

[For a long time I thought that the gaming companies here were writing software for computer games - Laura Croft and stuff like that]

I don't hold out much hope that gaming is the future saviour of the IoM economy, it's always been vulnerable, as was the finance sector.

We need a couple of key industries with proper investment from the private sector but IoMG facilitated. Tourism, Motorsport, IT, Education, are all areas which need consideration.

We can't survive with a purely service industry base, which basically services the local population, the money just runs out. We need an influx of large amounts of cash!

If my LinkedIn and network is right then a fair few of the under-30 Manx-born graduates who work in the e-Gaming sector are defecting back to the UK to work for companies there. Difficult to buy here unless you're on >£100k. No night life unless you want to socialise with the over 40's. We used to have a brain drain where a small number still came back. That small number who still came back used to do so but now they're moving back to the UK again. Why would they pay £1600/mo rent here for a house they could get in a Northern or Scottish big city for £1000/mo mortgage in the UK? Even if they could GET that house here for £1600/mo in the current housing shortage (god help them if they have kids or a pet). For anyone under 40 it's a no-brainer to move to the UK for a better life. Zoom and Whatsapp means you can speak to family on video chat anytime they want so there's no need to be here in person with the cost of living and daily inconveniences compared to the UK.

I think we're in for a very interesting census next time.

Yep. I fully expect all those graduates that the manx taxpayer funded will return to the Isle of Man eventually.

As retirees. To their parents' house.

Our MHKs don't seem to realise how difficult the Isle of Man is for the under 40's compared to the UK. Find me an under 40 MHK who has lived in the UK for more than 5 years after 2010 and I'll show you a gold plated hens tooth. The current strategies need to be given a shake and a wake-up call.

eGaming and Gaming simply sound nicer and reflect the changing nature of the industry, where the lines between games and gambling are blurred these days. Don't really have a problem with that.

Most IOM licensed websites have links to gamcare and other UK resources that are useless to players elsewhere. Instead, I have now started to push BetBlocker's Responsble Gambling Directory https://rgd.betblocker.org/ that automtically shows country relevant resources depending on where a player is based. Seems more useful and Duncan is doing great work in general.

We need a couple of tech giants.

Why would they come here? Can't find housing, immigration is overloaded, staff is hard to find, health service is broken, the list goes on.

I see the "economy" of this island continuing to deteriorate. Until the self serving and incompetent govt/civil service/local government is held to account nothing changes. The endless madcap schemes and profligate wasting of taxpayers money is destructive, year-by-year.

This will not change.

We need to play to our strengths and make this the outdoor pursuits capital of the UK. Get a Center Parcs over here and start working with the transport companies to get cheap flights and boat rides. The UK economy is going down so cheaper local holidays could be the way forward.
