Hooper has resigned

The interesting question is whether Hooper meant to resign.  Certainly when he was answering questions this morning, (again according to Sam Turton) he seemed to be trying to put the blame on Cannan:

Mr Hooper was also clear in telling members he does believe that Manx Care remains underfunded and that it was only acting after “the communications [that] came from on high”, that being the Chief Minister effectively ordering Manx Care to make cuts.

But he was still accepting that guts were needed even though they were damaging and possibly more expensive in the long term.  In that case why not resign then?  I can only suppose that Cannan ordered him to apologise publicly and instead he decided to go.

You've misunderstood.  He's only resigned as a Minister and said he wouldn't take any other positions under Cannan.  If he was resigning as an MHK he would be submitting his resignation to the President or the Governor not to the Chief Minister.

The question now is how long Cannan can last.

Annual reminder that it is only a simple majority of 13 required to oust him.

If the DOI Minister came out and said 'Liverpool Landing Stage is underfunded' would they receive the same sympathy?

Sympathy? Where has there been sympathy for Manx Care? Have you heard how many times in the last two weeks that Cannan has derided them for going over a budget that they were never going to stay within (see the Michael’s Report as evidence). And with each declaration from Cannan he’s become more and more scathing. Don’t you wonder why?

Indeed.  Shall we start counting?

Edge, Thomas and Christian are already the 'official' opposition.  To that we can add Hooper, Faragher and presumably Maltby.

Callister and Ashford were both sacked by Cannan, so you'd think you could add them, though both seem so eager to get back in that you could see them supporting him in return for a CoMin place, though it would make them look even more pathetic.  But on the whole both might still prefer revenge.

Wannenburgh, Moorhouse and Glover have all been pretty agnostic to the government and would be more likely to vote against, but not I think guaranteed.

Watterson would vote against Cannan I think.

That takes us to 12.  The remaining backbenchers are Smith, Corlett, Peters and Haywood.  Add to that that some CoMin members may be unhappy enough to vote for a no confidence and Cannan may be on shaky ground, but there's a lot of unknowns.

Then you ask the question if Cannan is ousted what will change?

The likely answer is nothing
