One thing I've always found odd. Why is MEC VANNIN a stuck record that only spouts old style 1970s socialism wrapped up in nonsensical, idyllic rose tinted nationalism.

Marx said nationalism was misdirected class war. Looks like he was right when it comes to the IOM.

From looking at their policies all I can presume is that MV wants to keep poor undertrodden manx poor and economically isolated. That would be the result of following their policies.

And of course noone with an English background is poor or economically isolated on the Island; no they're all supping champaigne and telling their Manx serfs to polish the silver.

What toss: all I can say is that I'm glad I had an early night last night and didn't stay up til 2 in the morning arguing bollox.

Just to clarify:

"free health service for all citizens" means "paid for from general taxation"

The idea for a Manx University on a fully independent Isle of Man is a non-starter as well, but to argue individual policy with the kind of hackneyed nationalism represented by Mec Vannin is largely fruitless.

It's focus and strengths do not lie with policy, but with romantic distortions of history and tired utopian visions. It's usually more effective to undermine this vision as a whole, and to point to what will be lost by placing one's faith in mindless nationalism for the sake of it than to chip away at what is ultimately just a facade of interest in rational policy making. Having said that, the progress of Mec Vannin over the past thirty years or so suggests that the Island has little to worry about.

I expect we'll get a pompous e-mail from the real Mec Vannin telling us that this person does not speak for them and to delete all the threads.

Mec Vannin pompous? Rather an uncharitable view of them. I mean they're only professing to be guiding us into a utopia, providing a solution to all our social ills, AND satiating their vast, personal persecution complexes that they've projected onto the entire Island. Ah, I see your point now.

How do I join Mec Vannin? I miss the Comedy Club from the Venue

I think you wrap your head in tin foil, sit in a field and scream at the top of your lungs about how the Queen is stealing your thoughts. Within moments they should be along to welcome you into the brotherhood.

Correct, there is no "x" in Manks, but there is an "x" in Manx - you can see it quite clearly, it is the 4th letter from the left.

What is Mec Vannin's policy on Ferrero Rocher at my receptions?

Although this is a pretty funny thread, this comment actually made me laugh out loud.

Me too. An excellent effort.

I have the dubious honour of being in Mr Mark Kermode's "kill" file.

Threatening behaviour is an offence irrespective of the medium over which it is made. But such is his fearsome reputation I didn't bother taking it any further. Dream on Mr K.....
