The other 3 SSC's I would think have a hard time with the Ice in Finland.

 

The rumour mill is beginning to spin, Different sources are commenting on the Ben getting another accomodation block in Jan (might explain why she is off the timetables for 2 1/2 months). Also, there is a possibility a French Dover ferry (Seafrance Renoir) could be on its way up tomorrow, but it would require some changing before it could be used.

 

Also, Brittany Ferries Normandie Express (The biggest evolution of the seacat design) might be with us next year.....

I thought it might be useful to highlight another ‘issue’ in regards to the Steam Packet.

 

I don’t think passengers should worry about their fares quite as much as they should elsewhere! The main worry should be about the cost of living on the Isle of Man with the Steam Packet increasing freight charges by another 5%!

 

Quite surprising, looking at the fact that Tesco, M&S & Co already pay MILLIONS a year to get their trailers across the Irish sea - guess who's gonna pick up the bill for that...

 

RUMOUR MILL RED ALERT:

 

People have been speculating that the SuperSeaCat is being battered by the Irish Sea, so much so that they are having to reinforce the hull to withstand the conditions. :ph34r:

 

This might all just be pub talk but the people in Scandinavia, who have operated these vessels, have experienced severe problems with maintaining a reliable service. With the Steam Packet yet to decide about a winter replacement for the Lady of Mann, the SuperSeaCat will have to remain in service.

 

N.B. Hasn't the SuperSeaCat been out of operation a few times this summer?

SSC has been out of operation a few times - If I remember it right, she was actually tied up and being used as "parts donor" for the other SSCs, before she was patched up again and brought back into service.

 

Structural damage is probably quite possible, looking at the fact that the vessel (she ain't a boat, no) is made of Aluminium, not steel, and tends to bend a bit when it gets battered...

 

I remember the SP as being very safety conscious, and although you can accuse them of ripping people off, their safety record is still very outstanding - so if they should reinforce her, then there's probably a good reason for it - precaution or reaction, who knows...

 

Pub talk or not, SSC2 shouldn't operate in these waters at this time of the year - if not for safety reasons, then at least on the grounds of reliability and passenger comfort - the Island deserves better!.

 

Bring back the Lady!

Seacat Isle of Man may be back in service as early as next Friday to replace bagpuss.

 

She will be able to get out in those "marginal" conditions that seem to break bits off the SSC2. I image then she will be going in for some "constructive" surgery.....

Isn't inflation always something of a vicious circle?

 

For example - presumably inflation results in increased costs - and would therefore cause Steam Packet prices to increase.

 

Pay cuts on the IOM would help reduce inflation. As would mortgage rates increases.

 

But the IOM govt doesn't control local interest rates. The only mechanism available to reduce money supply (and therefore inflation) is to increase personal taxation.

Steam Packet freight rates for a 13.6 metre box trailer or curtainsided trailer, i.e. the types used by M&S, Tesco etc will be £55.43 per metre as of 1st January 2006, there is also a fuel surcharge of £1 per metre currently in place (since 5th September) this equates to a round trip price of

 

£1507.69 + £27.20 fuel surcharge = £1534.89 (excl VAT)

 

Certain manufacturers and/or retailers operate a national pricing policy e.g. Cadburys, M&S and just absorb the extra cost of shipping in their overall distribution costs. Whilst the Isle of Man may be a considerable distance away (and expense for shipping) the nearest store to the RDC will be a comparitively easy and inexpensive journey so the costs just get averaged out for the whole country. However certain companies e.g. Isle of Man Breweries and others, always hike their prices and then blame transport costs, among other things for the increases. In this case the price rises almost certainly fuel inflation. Unfortunately inflation is something of a vicious circle, you put your price up to me, I ask for a pay rise, my boss puts his prices up to meet that extra cost, you pay more for his services and so it goes on.

 

Unfortunately our Government seems totally inept at dealing with this. In the case of the SPCO they are supposedly governed by the harbour user agreement which in exchange for conferring an effective monopoly on the SPCO, demands that they keep rate increases at 0.5% less than inflation. Their proposed rate increase from 1st January amounts to in excess of 5% yet current annual inflation is about 4.5%, and September and October were 3.2% and 3.9% respectively......work that one out!

I am having my boat transported up from Essex to the IOM on a low loader artic and the total cost is £1100 plus vat and that seems very good to me. And its coming on the IOMSP

sounds to me as if you've found a transport company that doesn't have a clue!

 

 

Wrong a specialist company than moves ships, planes and odd loads arround the world and even to the IOM as recently as this week
