Aint this nice Sleepwell Hotels get a nice big DTL grant to refurbish one of their Hotels and then lay 20 staff off just before Xmas

Wouldn't it be a good (and politically positive) idea if public money was only given to companies who can promise not to reduce their workforce?

If any MHKs read this maybe they would like to answer too.

Its in todays Manx Indy.

What does it say? I used to be able to read Manx news on IOM Newspapers website but now they don't give you any real news and just tell you to look in "today's Manx Independent". When will they stop doing this? do they not realise that many of the website readers aren't able to buy the newspaper.

You do realise they run their business to make a profit? Why should they give their product away free to the world?

The courier is paid for by advertising revenue.

The BBC is paid for by the license payer. They get their money whether they distribute their product to the rest of the world for free or not.

Let's compare apples with apples eh?

If the marketing folks working for the Examiner used their wits they would realise that they can claim circulation based on ‘clicks’ and not just on sales.

Others do and get enhanced rates for their advertisers.

Their website shouldn't be used just to advertise their product. Other news sites will offer full detailed coverage and generate a little extra profit from advertising rates or web sponsorship. If they can't be bothered offering all the news on the website then there's little point in using IOM Newspapers. However, the website is only a little bit more shockingly bad than the newspapers themselves.

Not read the article but I think that contrasting the DTI's investment in Manx property and buildings (which may well outlast the company currently using it) with the hirings and firings of personnel in that building and in one of the most volatile industries for hiring and firing is fallacious.

Are we talking about 20 glittering careers being snuffed out in their prime or just seasonal menial work coming to its end? If it's the latter - it's a hotel, happens all the time.

What does it say?

OK, for all the poor souls that can't get or can't read our great paper, here's (roughly) what it says:

20 out of work as hotel closes

A Hotel will close this weekend with the loss of 20 jobs.

They hoped that the Chesterhouse Hotel, Loch Promenade, Douglas, could be kept open during a major refurbishment programme.

A spokesman for Sleepwell Hotels, which runs the hotel, said the scale of the work meant it couldn't be kept open during refurbishment and it will reopen next year in the three star market.

A former employee was quoted as saying that he (and the staff) knew about the refurbishment but thought they'd do one floor at a time, not the whole thing at once. All of them are out of work until next year.

Once again, a spokesman was quoted as saying that "It's unfortunate" that 20 jobs were lost, but he hopes that the refurbished hotel will benefit staff and customers.

The article also mentioned that the Old Bailey has closed for refurbishment and will be reopened as "Amber" a "family friendly food pub". The last bit says that it is hoped, that most of the now unemployed staff will be re-employed there once it's done...
