At the recent Care Inquiry, it was revealed the DHSS had to buy tents to house 16 and 17 year olds during busy summer periods, because they were evicted by private landlords. The Department said the problem was exaggerated because there was no access to public sector housing for youths until they are 18, and private sector housing was too expensive.
