My ex suffered from psoriasis and was prescribed steroid ointment to be made up by the pharmacist. After several years, he went to his doctor for a repeat prescription to be asked "You're not still on that are you?" When he stopped using it, we both lost weight. Is it possible that the steroids in his ointment were rubbing off on the sheets etc. and causing me to put on weight also, which I then lost (as did he) when he stopped using it?

Repeat prescibing needs to be far more regulated than appears to be the case here. This is almost unforgiveable but this the way sometimes with skin conditions but it shouldn't be. I believe this is unlikely to happen these days as far better training is given to doctors, nurses, pharmacists and communication kills are now part of the course.

The weight increase seems to be the manifestation of similar symptoms as Cushing's syndrome where obesity is a side effect.

It is possible that the sheets were so soiled with the steroid ointment that you also were absorbing the medication. Some protective cotton could have perhaps prevented this.

I would say you did not get the advice that was necessary when a member of the family uses potent medication.

Thank you Charles, interesting. From what you say, the sheets would have had to be pretty well soaked in the stuff but that wasn't the case; the nature of the complaint meant I had to be quite fastidious to prevent irritation. Perhaps just occupying the same bed was sufficient to allow cross-absorption. The weight loss wasn't dramatic for me, but noticeable.

As for advice, there were a number of other reasons that I had misgivings about the particular specialist concerned! Thankfully, no longer my problem.

Those steroids are bad for weight gain - least thats my excuse - I've been on oral steroids for 8 or so years - It's been difficult keeping my weight down - I haven't been totally successful. Added to which my condition (Ulcerative Colitis) isn't exactly an easy one to fit tons of exercise around.

I was taking prednisolene for the first 6 years - it was really nasty stuff, hair loss, weight gain thinning of the bones and the skin - should see my strech marks. Managed to get on to a different steroid that affects the lower intestine more specifically (budesonide). It agrees with me much more. If you are having side effects there are often variants of a medicine that are better suited to you and your condition so it pays to ask your doc/consultant. It can also depend what aspect of the medicine you are allergic to.

Still at least it never effected my ability to have kids.

Chloephoria - boasting about abusing the ambulance service is nothing to be proud of.

You may have delayed seriously ill patients from getting to hospital - just because you couldn't handle your weed.

I think we all know who's the wanker around here.

The idea is to keep the maintenance dose of the medicine as low as possible. Regular contact with the doctor is always the best course especially with corticosteroids. Of course some people can't take tablets. In these cases other forms are available.

You have my sympathy.

Only had to take steroids once. I had the same reaction as zippy and had really bad tempered moments. The pharmacist told me they were and I quote her "Happy Hormones". Didn't make me feel happy.

She must have been thinking of 'endorphins' at the time --these help stress, pain.
