They allow you to park in a disc zone all day, past the usual 2hr limit.

You have to be actually working somewhere near where you park your Van*, SUV* or Range Rover*, depending on your type of building specialisation.

*ETA. Not a Porsche, no self respecting tradesman would have one of them, as they don't seem to do a tow bar kit 🙂

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should

The People's Champion is at it again...

As a quote of the day it takes some beating.  Of course on one level Stu is perfectly correct.  Six quid a day to be able to park anywhere in residential Douglas is a good deal and as discussed before it hasn't risen for many years.  And presumably tradespeople will just pass on the cost anyway.  Whether it's the best scheme to allow such people to work easily on residential projects is another matter.

However it rather undercuts Stu's self-promotion as the motorist's champion.  It turns out in the end the only motorist he was championing was himself.  Now obviously every other vocal motorist (at those who comment on here) turns out to have to have same personal opinion and really thinks that roads should be cleared of all other traffic so they can drive wherever as fast as they want and then park conveniently.  But it's not usually wise to make this self-centredness so clear.

And claiming that now he looks into things more, it's more complicated is indeed true.  But most of us have worked this revelation out at seven rather than seventy and it might have been wise to do some investigation before standing for election.

It's certainly worth noting how much resentment the failure to reinstate parking charges for civil servants and politicians still causes.  It shows the weakness of our politicians that they are unable to impose what should be an 'easy win' on the civil servants who now seem to dictate their every action.

Something that occurred to me was the potential masterstroke (from the CS point of view) of offering the candidate of motorist's champion a seat in the DOI where he wouldn't be able to oppose anything that might adversely impact on the cash-cow motorists.

As has proved to be the case. From pointing out that motorists see only a third of their VED spent on the roads in November 2021, Stu told them less than 2 years later that they weren't paying enough tax. Utter turn-around.

  • 2 weeks later...

"This week was filled with energy, passion and honesty. Our staff conference saw our people discuss how we collectively move forward as an organisation. It’s been a difficult few years! We will now start to change the way we work with amazing and commited people across our public sector. Watch this space"

Who is this? Andy Ralphs. Extensive use of the word "we".  And his spelling-checker does not work.
