More Electricity Price Rises? Looks Like It.

It looks possible that there may be yet further big hikes in energy prices on the Island made worse by the dam(n) fool strategy to generate on the Island as opposed to importing electricity from the mainland generators.

Millions of households face big increases in bills after wholesale gas prices surged 127 per cent in just ten days.

The rise was driven by the recent cold snap and mounting panic that the UK could suffer a gas shortage this winter.

The development threatens further hikes in both gas and electricity bills for domestic customers and has triggered a crisis for industry, with some firms claiming they may have to shut down.

The spot price for gas - which is bought and supplied on the day - has more than doubled in ten days from 36p per therm to 82p.

At the same time, the price of gas bought now to be supplied in the first three cold months of 2006 has gone up 21 per cent or 14p to just over 80p per therm.

The National Grid company has drawn up contingency plans to cope with a gas shortage, which would also hit electricity supplies.

This is because gas fuels some 40 per cent of the country's electricity power stations.

The plans include cutting off supplies to big industrial users and saving gas used to generate electricity by turning down the voltage in the mains, dimming lights across the country.

Last night the Conservatives claimed secret meetings had been held in Downing Street to discuss a potential energy crisis, despite previous denials from the Government that there is any prospect of shortages this winter.

We'd still get hit by the same price rises even if we imported our electricity

No. Not all UK electricity is derived from gas by any means.

Also there is the matter of the economy of scale whereby it costs less to make electricitry from a big plant than a small one plus there is the capital cost of the new power station and the gas interconnct to be paid for due to the strategy chosen for the Isle of man, a strategy that is highhly favourable to the parent company.
