manxchatterbox
not on a mission but just a few crumbs rather than feed out a whole loaf just to see what gets flushed out before slinking off to see if I should shoot the wild dog unless Atticus Finch already dealt with it in which case Scout might be with Arthur Boo Radley in which case it'll be time to kill a mockingbird ....... sarahc
For the record, Government employees have to pay for their own parties. But they do get a whole hour off in the afternoon to attend.
inspector
Just to be pedantic - sarahc is indeed correct insomuch as most Gov't employees pay for their own ( I mean, heaven forbid, could you imagine the outcry if we spent the winter heating allowances on a big party for the humble civil servants.) That said, of course, unless you work for the MEA. I know for certain that they are indeed paid for by the firm.

Gladys
The company I worked for for a long time never had company-wide Xmas parties. Individual deptartments would organise their own and would receive a subsidy of Stg5.00 per head, but it was one these third economy outfits. For a couple of years they did have unsubsidised Xmas parties at the RAC Country Club in Epsom; formal and "very nice", but really would you want to pay for the pleasure of socialising on a formal basis with a seating plan ?!! Here, our company have been all out and the Xmas doings are normally great fun with Secret Santa, party bags and much talk about hair and what to wear. Although the girls just usually sling something on and turn up! Last year, we even bumped Madonna and Guy as it was a "private party, sorry madam, sir"! Cost per head? I really don't know. Am I looking forward to it? Yes, got me Barbara Cartland dress ready, so the boys in the Clarrie better watch out!
Amadeus
I'm self-employed in a one-man business. The cost of my staff Christmas party is really quite modest. A mince pie and a can of coke at the side of the road, with "Jingle Bells" on the car stereo ? I remember working in Paramount during a few Christmas parties in the past - all booked by finance/insurance type companies, and they usually set a fixed budget before the start of the night - once the total reaches X, people have to pay for drinks themselves... That amount X was usually quite generous, but what really annoyed me was that suddenly everyone drank double / triple / quadruple+ drinks, and some of these cubicle inhabitants were clearly taking the pi** and going over the top, only because the company paid... The expression on their faces when they ordered another four triple vodka and coke, and I politely told them that the free bar just finished and they owe me 25 quid (or whatever it was at the time) for the lot now was priceless, though Remember to be careful when you attend to your company christmas do, and don't go over the top - you'll have to face the same people you pole danced for in that restaurant in the office again the next day, and you'll all be sober again.. And if people call you "boss", be extra careful: Christmas kiss warning for bosses Christmas cheer or legal fear? Merry Christmas and all that
