Lonan3
George Best was an exceptionally talented footballer whose mercurial skills delighted spectators although, IMO, he does not rank very highly among the all-time greats. His alcoholism was destructive and, apparently, uncontrollable. It is not unfair to wonder whether the new liver he was given might not have been better used on a more appreciative recipient. He lived his life to the full and crammed a lot of pleasure into it but, at the same time, wasted the talent that he undoubtedly had. He was an icon for a hedonistic age - much in the same vein as the comedian Peter Cook. It does no harm for football fans to demonstrate some respect for his passing - either by the one-minute silence or by the final round of applause for the enjoyment he provided. The 'fans' who refused to do that are ignorant - it wouldn't have cost them anything to shut up for sixty seconds.
