manxchatterbox
See IOM Examiner re £40million rival hotel headline... Who thinks that if the Sefton and Gala Hilton are so certain of their plans then they should put up and submit detailed plans and start building, or otherwise shut up?? Or is that their plans require some sort of Government / taxpayers financial assistance package?
TerryMcCann
If you read the story in full we won't be getting another hotel. It will replace the Hilton on the prom (more flats anyone?) Sounds good to me. If they move the casino to the bus station site there will be no need to get a taxi home anymore
manxchatterbox
doh...I meant in addition to the Government scheme ..for the Bus Station site..i.e. doesn't that count as "another"??

Beckett
God if there's one thing that needs pulling down (apart from the new beight 90s apartments near Queen's) it's the Hilton! I'm all confused, we're getting the Government one on the Bus Staion site. Once across the road with a cinema and bowling alley. Is this another one? Also, whatever happened to the new 7 story glass Isle of Man Steam Packet HQ that was to be built across the road from the Bus Station?! It's like car park central round there, no wonder Shaw's Brow is always empty.
manxchatterbox
yup ...that's the gist of it....Govt have a plan for the bus station site - a four/five star 130 bedroom hotel with cafes bars restuarants and quayside views over the marina - on the other side of Lord Street (the site next to the Cafe) Sefton/Gala Hilton say they want to do a four star 220 bed hotel complex complete with health club, casino, restaurants and bars, four screen cinema, and bowling alley...so ok.. the stilton on the prom then comes down and gets replaced by apartments..but still we end up with another hotel.. apparently most hotels operate at below 50% occupancy for seven months of the year...so with Sleepwells hotels and the Four Seasons etc...who would use a hotel in Lord Street and with no sea views? Billy One Mate
Manxchaterbox if you have a trip over to the Planning dept you could have a look at reasonably detailed plans that were submitted for planning in principle which happened before the DTL decided to get submissions for the bus station site. The site is the area behind the new police station.
manxchatterbox
interesting about the detailed plans already submitted..am also wondering...isn't the site within an area subject to some big tax breaks / 100% or more capital deductionb write off for doing re-development etc?? so doesn't that mean the taxpayer would be footing the costs?? Lonan3
There is a kind of cycle that seems to be used to explain the decline in tourism: 1. People don't come her because it's too expensive to travel. 2. It's expensive because not enough people use the sea and air services available. 3. It's pointless trying to attract new visitors because there's not enough quality accomodation for them to stay in. Perhaps (and I know it is a very big 'perhaps'), if someone was to begin breaking the cycle by increasing the decent accomodation available it might just help to stimulate some growth? mollag
People stopped coming to the island because they could get better, cheaper elsewhere, we kid ourselves to think we have a monopoly on views, history, good food or nice places to walk, for the average english person they can get all of these at the end of a motorway for the cost of a tank of fuel. Our time has been and gone, tourism is an ex parrot.
crumlin
Two Casinos in the same area thats going to be nice, but one might have a head start with a £6million DTL Grant
ian rush
and if there were a tunnel people from England could indeed drive here for the cost of a tank of fuel... Just like the Channel Tunnel is free. And didn't your most recent fuckwit idea suggest a branch to the *Wexford-Wales* tunnel.
crumlin
Does this meen that the Sumerland site is not going to be re-developed. Lord street would make a good Shopping Mall
crumlin
One of the contractors/developers in the final 3 of this new hotel contract, McCleans has a very cosy relationship with the Profesional Company that is doing the veting for the DTL. the illness must be spreading
manxchatterbox
as far as the old Corpy Cambrian Place car park development site is concerned I think it interesting to note that it looks very unlikely that building work of any sort is going to get underway anytime in the near future - 'cos there is a nice wooden fence up and the area inside has all been divided up into contract let car park spaces - which you wouldn't do would you if you were going to start building??? So, I really do think its about time developers who put forward fancy headline grabbing schemes like the one that has been submitted either put up or shut up and get the work underway or otherwise be recognised as fanciful dreamers.....
