A recent review of an fdH gig....

Joseph's Well

four day Hombre + Martha + Ashley Hicklin

Words by Scott Dixon

Another throng of the endemic fans present at all gigs assembles in the intimate surroundings, ready to put their faith in their own bible of inspirational vocals and crushing guitar.

From now on its effortless harmonies that have recently catapulted the Magic Numbers to fame, spine-tingling piano and the kind of violent guitar jerk that could spark riots. The band are tight, years of excruciating touring shows with singer Simon commanding every inch of the stage. The cult status which now befalls the band tells its own story, and another stunning set shows how the genre defying gentleman continue to lure unsuspecting spectators into their midst. The angst of romance has never sounded so encapsulating as the lyrics judder into juxtapositions of inspiration and chaos, every song lurching into a crescendo of unadulterated joy. Even songs of service station despair, offer sweet voiced compassion for the more discerning Ginsters pasty enthusiast. Final song 'The First Word is the Hardest' takes the biscuit, and is justly met with rapturous applause. Angelic vocals sting the eardrum, before the excess of pounding piano serves up for a final thrust into destructive guitar which threatens to shoot a hole into your soul.

The violent feedback still bouncing from the ceiling, Hombre are compelled to swagger back onto centre stage for an encore and finally the crowd are content. With debut album finally impending and promising to prove a melodic masterpiece, theirs still for the band to make the breakthrough. But until then they most importantly continue to put smiles across the faces of their knowledgeable followers. Another job well done.

Saw these guys at the Sugarmill in Stoke last month, they were really good. The band seemed very tight, and the singers voice is something to behold. The crowd didn't seem to get into it until near the end but when they did it turned a rather good gig into a brilliant gig. I'd definitely recommend going to see them.
